NIT Warangal Launches New MTech Course to Boost the Power Sector in India

The Department of Electrical Engineering from the institute has come up with a new MTech course in ‘Smart Electric Grid.’


The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal is one of the most prestigious autonomous technical institutes in the country. Let’s discuss why:

NIT Warangal Launches New MTech Course 

The Department of Electrical Engineering from the institute has come up with a new MTech course in ‘Smart Electric Grid.’ This course will start from the academic year 2020-21. The course will be available as an option for the students when they apply for admission into the institute this year. 

The course has been introduced with the hope of boosting the power sector in the country. With recent developments in new and renewable energy technologies, many new opportunities will open up for students post-graduation in this course. You will need to take up the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam, followed by a written test and interview as an admission procedure.

Structuring the new MTech course

To get the new course listed among the MTech programs of the institute, the department has obtained in-principle approval from the Academic Senate of the institute. Thus the institute has been granted permission to start the course from 2020. 

To finalize the syllabus and the new curriculum, several internal faculty discussions, as well as meetings, have been held. The internal team then created a final draft for this new MTech course, which was then circulated to many different subject experts in the field to get their feedback and suggestions. 

This includes subject experts from academics and the industry — ABB, Bangalore; Power Grid Corporation of India, Gurgaon, New Delhi; National Load Despatch Centre of Power System Operation Corporation, New Delhi; GE Renewable Energy, Hyderabad; IISc, Bangalore; and IIT-Kharagpur. The valuable suggestions given by these experts were incorporated in the final syllabus.

What is the syllabus for this new MTech course?

This workshop was conducted from 6 March 2020 to 7 March 2020. The event was planned in alliance with the meeting of the Board of Studies (BoS). The Director of the institute, Prof. N V Ramana Rao initiated the workshop. 

The industry experts were invited to discuss and decide ways to implement the new M.Tech program effectively and draft the pros and cons of the course. There was a two-day workshop held for the finalization, and adding this course in NIT-Warangal’s MTech program list.

The syllabus would include energy conversion covering economic, sustainable, reliable, and efficient conservation of energy along with generation, distribution, transmission, utilization, and storage of energy. It would also include the application of power electronics in operation and control of power systems. The syllabus for this MTech course has theories, research activities, and applied mathematics.

What experts are saying on this MTech program?

Different experts expressed their opinions on the need for such a course and how it would be helpful for the candidates willing to build a career in this field. The HOD of Electrical Engineering, Professor S Srinivasa Rao explained the importance of introducing this MTech on Smart Electric Grid. He also spoke about the background for the launch of the course outlining the profile of the department. 

The research activities conducted by the department in this field were highlighted in the workshop. One of the speakers in the workshop was Akilu Rehman, Chief Technology Officer of ABB, Hyderabad expressed his positive opinion on this new MTech course. According to him, this course is based on important and contemporary technology that has a major impact on the power and energy sector. All the experts present in the workshop congratulated the department and the institute for the same.

Scope of the new MTech at NIT, Warangal

After graduating with this program, students can continue research in different areas. Some of these research areas are:

  • Modeling.
  • Development and designing of electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • On-line security assessment.
  • Marketing and business of e-mobility policies in India and other countries. 
  • Renewable energy resources.
  • Integration of storage devices with renewable energy.
  • Data interoperability in smart grid, along with many other options. 

Candidates can use their knowledge of smart grid or electric vehicles by applying the engineering principles to manage such projects efficiently. Improving the quality and reliability of power supply in the country is also something that the students can work on after finishing this MTech course. 

The placement options in this field are also no longer limited. With the recent shift of the automobile industries to hybrid vehicles, many career opportunities in industries like Mahindra and Tata Motors will open up in the coming years.
