This week was full of important events that deserve your attention. Pulitzer Prize winner Photo Journalist Danish Siddiqui was killed in Afghanistan. Many journalists gathered at the Press Club of India to pay their respects to the departed.  Let us take a look at other important news highlights from the week.

 

1.Monsoon Sessions Began on a Bitter Note today

The Monsoon session in the Parliament today began on a bitter note. The opposition created an uproar and was preventing Prime Minister Narendra Modi from introducing his new- inducted Union Ministers to the House. As the disruptions continued, both the houses were adjourned till 11 am tomorrow. Criticising the opposition for not allowing Prime Minister to speak, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The opposition must ask tough questions but also allow the government to answer them.”

2. Danish Siddiqui buried at Jamia  Millia Islamia graveyard in Delhi

Photo Journalist Danish Siddiqui, killed in Afghanistan on Friday was buried in the graveyard of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday. The funeral attracted hundreds of mourners ( who did not follow social distancing). The 41 –year –old was the chief photographer for Reuters news agency in India. Notably, he was on assignment when he died. Based out of Mumbai, Siddiqui worked with Reuters for more than a decade.

3.  Aajtak Sacked Journalist Shyam Meera Singh for Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi “Shameless”

#Aajtak is trending on Twitter. Journalist Shyam Meera Singh who was employed with Aajtak was sacked from the company after he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi shameless. Shyam Meera Singh took to Twitter and shared his termination as well. After he shared the tweets, Netizens were quick to respond. Many slammed India Today for their move and the topic is trending since morning. Notably, Shyam Meera Singh has been vocal against the BJP government led by PM Modi over its various policies and especially its inefficiency in handling COVID-19 situation.

4. Heavy Rainfall in Delhi, waterlogging in many parts of the city

The National Capital received heavy rainfall on Monday morning. After every rainfall, Delhi faces the problem of waterlogging and this time too there was nothing new. After the heavy rainfall, a bus got stuck in Prahladpur. People travelling on the bus faced a lot of problems and complained about waterlogging issue they have been facing for the last 25 years.

5. 116 Stranded tourists rescued from Kharghar Hills after heavy rain

78 women and five children were rescued by police and a team of fire department after they got stranded at Kharghar Hills in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai following heavy rainfall on Sunday. According to the police, entry to Kharghar Hills and Pandavkada the waterfall is restricted but people managed to evade police and trek to hills.

6. Delta Covid-19 Variant is 60 per cent more transmissible than Alpha 

Delta COVID-19 19 variant was found in India in 2020. The panel of government has said that it is 60 per cent more transmissible than the Alpha variant. They said, “On invading human cells, they replicate faster.”
