J&K government has decided to introduce 11 new subjects, gets a thumbs up from the youth of Kashmir
In a recent development the government of Jammu and Kashmir has decided to introduce 11 new subjects at the senior secondary level to prepare the students for the new developments around the world.
Currently, Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Examination (J&KBOSE) is offering 52 subjects at the secondary level. After seeing a huge demand for new subjects J&KBOSE had sent a proposal for in introduction of 11 new subjects which include Business Administration, Rural Education, Mass Communication, Tourism, Bio-chemistry, Bio-Resources, Fisheries, Disaster management, Gender Sanitization, Social work, and Library science.

However, there are chances that subjects like Heritage craft, Graphic design, Creative Writing and Translation, Fine Arts, Engineering Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, and Legal Studies can also be introduced.
638 posts of teachers have to be arranged for introducing new subjects in the UT school education department, in which 266 posts are to be filled in Kashmir and 372 in the Jammu region.
Saliq Parveen, who is perusing P.HD from Central University of Kashmir, applauded the move and said, “There are predominantly four common fields in Kashmir and introducing new such creative subjects is a good initiative but, there is a need to create awareness among the students about the subjects.”
Saliq further added “We don’t have to just see the government is announcing the introduction of 11 subjects, but we have to see how many schools are actually going to offer these subjects to students.”
In the proposal, the Directorates of School Education, Kashmir and Jammu, have sought creation of additional 2,277 posts, including 1,959 posts in Kashmir and 318 in Jammu the region, in already introduced subjects.
“A total of 2915 posts, including 638 posts for introducing new subjects, to be filled on ad hoc basic in which 2225 posts are to be filled in Kashmir division only and 690 in Jammu”, the proposal said.
The move has been widely applauded by the youth of Kashmir, describing it as the need of the hour.
Zahid Farooq, a 10th class student said “It is indeed a very good step taken by the government. We now have a wide variety of subjects to choose from. I always wanted to pursue my career in Tourism management now I don’t have to study some other subject in secondary level education before actually choosing what I want to study.”
He added, “Now I can prepare for the Tourism studies at the secondary level which actually saves me a lot of time and helps me to prepare much better.”
While there has been a lot of appreciation for the move, there has been a concern that there is no proper guidance from the government for students to help them choose which subjects they should choose.
Saliq Parveez said, “There should be career guidance centres from the government in schools for students after they pass 10 class exams so that they can be guided about their strengths, dreams and aspirations so that they can choose a subject they are interested in. Parents should be involved so that students should not be forced to choose a subject they are not interested in.”
Saliq added that “I was not sure until my graduation what I wanted to pursue in life. My parents forced me to choose medical and did my graduation in computer science it was during my graduation I realized I am more inclined to literature. If there were such any literature of journalism subjects after 10th I would not have wasted many of my years perusing subjects I was not interested in.”
According to the proposal out of 11 subjects, 7 subjects which include tourism, gender sensitisation, social work, disaster management, rural development, library sciences and bio-resources, will be included only in Kashmir division, and two subjects’ bio-chemistry and fine arts (music & painting) will be introduced only in Jammu division only.
Principal Secretary School education department, Asghar Samoon tweed and confirmed the news about the introduction of new subjects at the senior secondary level.
“Introducing new subjects in school education and ongoing subjects in more schools. This is just a proposal at the preliminary stage. All the suggestions are welcomed and will be considered,” Principal Secretary School Education and Skill Development Asgar Samoon tweeted.
