After several rounds of talks, the Centre proposed suspension of the implementation of three contentious farm laws for up to a year and a half so that farmers and the government can arrive at a consensus on them. The government also proposed a joint committee consisting of representatives from both the sides towards solving the issue.

A day later, farmers rejected the government’s offer to suspend the three agri laws for a year and a half, and set up a committee to find a solution to end the impasse. The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of around 40 unions, announced the decision of rejection after a famers’ union’s meeting at Singhu border. It appeared a difficult decision for farmers as they held several rounds of talks through the day on Thursday and sought opinion from the protesting farmers at the Delhi NCR borders.

It was reported that 17 of the total 32 farmers’ unions of Punjab rejected the Centre’s offer and called it a tactic to derail the protest by dividing the farmers. Farmers alleged that the government was trying to buy peace for the time being by suspending the laws for 1.5 years.

The next day when Farmers’ Union and Centre met on Friday, the Centre asked farmers to consider its proposal on the temporary suspension of the implementation of the agri laws. The Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the next meeting would be scheduled only after the farmer unions come back with a response. The government had also said that it can’t do any better than offering a 2-year hold and a joint committee.

They went on to win the Melbourne and batted throughout the final day to draw the third Test in Sydney.
