If you are looking for stories of bravery, sacrifice, valour, gallantry and hard work, you should easily lean forward to books that tell stories of the Indian Army. But you might think which book to read first. Military books which outline the operation, sacrifices and bravery of our soldiers are hard to find as Indian writers have rarely touched this non-fiction category.  Well to ease your decision, we have brought a list of books on Indian Army.

India’s Bravehearts: The Untold Stories of the Indian Army – by Satish Dua

Have you ever wondered what a soldier life really looks like? This book, written by one of the most celebrated officers, Satish Dua, Lieutenant General (Retired), gives a rare inside account of the stories of the Indian Army. The book tells gripping stories of surgical strikes, death-defying operations and the intense training Indian soldiers have to go through to become battle-fit. It will tell you what life of our soldiers looks like who make the ultimate sacrifice for the country. Satish Dua has shared some interesting stories which include an instance on how he once escaped the firing from Pakistani side or an instance when a soldier was married to the widow of martyr soldier.

India’s most fearless – by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh

The book is based on true stories of 14 courageous and fearless Indian soldiers who displayed great spirit in the line of duty. The book, written by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, gives readers a glimpse of complete heroism the soldiers displayed under a hostile environment like the surgical strike in Myanmar and Pakistan. This is a highly recommended book, especially for teenagers, so that they could understand the high level of sacrifice made by Indian soldiers for them to have a peaceful environment. There is even a sequel to this book written by the same writers.

Mission Overseas: Daring Operations by the Indian Military – by Sushant Singh

Mission Overseas is written by Sushant Singh who explains three primary military operations carried out by the Indian Army in foreign lands. The book speaks volume about the path our army personnel’s courage in unfamiliar territories, with limited resources.  The book has a fact-based approach in the narration which helps the reader visualize all the scenes narrated in an easy-to-understand language.

Large operations like “Operation Khukri – Indian soldiers were rescued in Sierra Leone,” “Operation Cactus – aimed to restore the civilian government in the Maldives,” and “Operation Pawan- against the LTTE in Jaffna, where we suffered heavy casualties.”

 The book has some great lessons which every reader could learn apart from knowing India’s military ability in overseas conditions.

The Brave: Param Vir Chakra stories by Rachna Bisht Rawat

This is a very special book which tells stories about the real heroes of the Indian armed forces who had to make a sacrifice for the country. The book has 21 shocking stories of 21 soldiers who won India’s honour. The writer has spoken to children, parents and siblings of the armed forces to understand how they conducted their duties while in battle. Rawat has also illustrated the passion behind each soldier when they go to a battle.

  • The Indo-Pak war (1947-48),
  • Congo (1961),
  • The Sino-Indian war (1962),

Probal Dasgupta has outlined India-China skirmishes and conflicts that happened during the 1962 war. He also narrates how India lost the war during the 1962 conflict and emerged victorious five years later when India and China went to battle again in 1967. It has been around half-century then, but China has never again tried to military attack the country. Yes, there is standoff going on between the soldiers of two countries at the Ladakh border along the Line of Actual Control. The book is based on deep research and interviews of soldiers and army officers who participated in these historic battles. It also aims to shine the spotlight on a story of incredible bravery that India should be proud of.
