“Unity born out of tragedy is not a unity that can be easily lost”

31st October is one of those dates which may be forgiven but not forgotten. The shrieks and struggle of survival is still somewhere residing in the hearts of the Sikh community.

This topic has been raised and dusted off every time it surges owing to it’s political inclinations and repercussions and thus, a territory less likely to be treaded for even the creative bollywood movie makers.

However, we all have witnessed that the time has changed when it comes to stringent religious beliefs and with time Bollywood’s movie makers have learnt to handle the silk threads of emotionally strong topics like the Sikh riots of ’84. The world of glamour in India brings to it’s nation, ‘October 31st,’ a movie which would talk about the Sikh Riots of 1984.

Students who have been reading or read about ‘Operation Blue Star’ and conspiracy involved in Indira Gandhi’s death, would now be able to know about it in the form of a movie. The movie, 31st October, is directed by National Award Winning Director Shivaji Lotan Patil and Produced by Harpeet Sachdeva.

Soha Ali Khan and Vir Das would be seen playing the lead role in the movie. After releasing the first look and teaser of the movie, Soha shared her fainted memory of 1984 and her role in the movie, Soha says, “I was very young when this incident happened and unfortunately, we shifted to Delhi in that period of time only. We had a sardarji with us and my father wanted him to escape from the place because of the riots that were happening.

He refused but because we forced he went away and a day after he left, Indira Gandhi died. I saw families losing their kids, wives losing husbands and what not. It was really a sad and difficult time however, people today don’t know much about it. So, through this movie we are trying to inform them and it is indeed an honour to be a part of it. I play the character of a Punjabi lady, who has three kids. I have worked much on my accent however, talking in pure punjabi was little difficult so, people would get to hear my Delhi flavoured Punjabi. We hope you all watch it and love our work in this movie.”

Further, Harpreet Sachdeva, Director, said, “The movie is about that one single day and it is very simple. It is not to intricate people but to spread the message of love and harmony all around. This is a sensitive issue but we all have grown quite modern now. So, I hope you all really enjoy the movie.”

“It is going to be around 1.5 years since I started writing the plot of the movie. I was approached to do this movie the very moment I won national award. The moment I heard the story I was excited to make this movie. I wanted the story to be as real as possible and the characters to be able to relate to each scene. I have given my best to this movie. However, would be glad if you all watch it and tell me how it was. We haven’t made this movie to get back those bad memories but to make you all know the history so that we never repeat It.” says the National Award Winner Director Shivaji Lotan Patil.

The event gave a tribute to the 1984 victims and the evening went to another height when Harshdeep Kaur with her bold voice enthralled the audience.
