PM Modi has been to The United States of America multiple times, but this is the first time he has the honour of a US state visit. A state dinner will be hosted in his honour at the White House on June 22.

What is a state visit?
A state visit is a formal visit by the head of state to a foreign country, on the invitation extended by the head of state of the other country.

It is the highest-ranked category of foreign visits. PM Modi is the third global leader to receive a state visit invitation from President Biden. Before him, France’s President Emmanuel Macron and South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol are the only two leaders to have received this invitation.
Prime Minister Modi is also the second Prime Minister of India to have made such a visit, after Manmohan Singh. This is a huge win for the BJP Modi Government as the visit shows that the US considers India a powerful ally and friend.
Though Modi has visited six times since 2014 –in September 2014, September 2015, March-April 2016, June 2016, June 2017, and September 2019- this marks his first official state visit since being in power.

What is the state dinner?
A part of the official state visit would be the state dinner that is hosted at the residence of the US President.

According to White House Historical Association (WHHA), “A state dinner honoring a visiting head of government or reigning monarch is one of the grandest and most glamorous of White House affairs. It is part of an official state visit and provides the president and first lady the opportunity to honor the visiting head of state and his or her spouse. It is a courtesy, an expression of goodwill, and a way of extending hospitality. It brings to mind the tradition of breaking bread with friends to seal a friendship.”
During the visit, Modi will also address the US Congress, becoming the first PM to do so twice. As a guest on a state visit, he will also stay at Blair House- the official guest house of the President.
