What an amazing film it is. This film is based on a classic Urdu short story Ananandi written by Ghulam Abbas. The film depicts life in a brothel run by Rukmini (Shabana Azmi) in the centre of the city. Due to various reasons, the brothel is shifted to the outskirts of the city. Problems arise when the son of a big politician wants to marry one of the prostitutes from this brothel. With Naseerudin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in the lead, you know what to expect.

Another film which make its name into the list is Katha. This film was loosely based on the folktale of the hare and the tortoise, mixed with the theme of the good boy vs. the bad boy. It is a love triangle between a simple guy, a smooth talker, and the girl in the neighbourhood. Naseerudin Shah, Deepti Naval and Farooque Sheikh’s power packed performances make this a must watch.

8. Ijaazat

This film was directed by Gulzar in 1987, based on Subodh Ghosh’s Bengali novel Jatugriha. It is a story of a couple who meets long after their separation only to discover some truths about each other’s lives. With Rekha, Naseerudin Shah and Anuradha Patel in the lead roles, this movie was extraordinary in terms of acting. It also received two national awards in the music category.
