On April 30 2025 Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor fifth death anniversary falls. After a protracted fight with cancer Rishi Kapoor who was well-known for his affable on-screen persona and candid demeanor off-screen passed away on this day in 2020 in a Mumbai hospital.
Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
After receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2018 Rishi Kapoor spent almost a year in New York receiving treatment. After he recovered he reportedly returned to India in good health. But while filming a movie in early 2020 his health started to decline once more. The cancer was soon found to have returned. Despite his tenacity and willpower he lost the fight and died on April 30 2020.
A Candid Public Persona
In addition to his acting career Kapoor was renowned for being open and honest in public appearances and interviews. He was never afraid to express his opinions whether they were related to his work or personal life. His autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored is replete with audacious admissions and disclosures.
Controversial Award Confession
His acknowledgement in his book that he had paid to win a film award was one of the most talked-about revelations. Kapoor disclosed in a newswire interview that he purchased the Best Actor prize in 1973 for his role in Bobby. He later acknowledged that the award was the Filmfare Best Actor Award even though he did not mention it in his book. He acknowledged that Taraknath Gandhi, a public relations specialist, offered him the prize in return for thirty thousand rupees which he accepted without giving it much thought. He also apologized particularly because many people thought Amitabh Bachchan who starred in Zanjeer that year would win.
Tensions with Amitabh Bachchan
Additionally Rishi Kapoor revealed details of a protracted cold war with Amitabh Bachchan. He claimed that regardless of the performances of other actors Bachchan would frequently receive all the credit for a multi-starrer movie’s success. Although he might have been a smaller actor than Bachchan, Kapoor thought he was just as talented. His disappointment stemmed from Bachchans failure to publicly recognize the contributions of his co-stars which included Vinod Khanna Shatrughan Sinha Dharmendra Shashi Kapoor and himself.
Struggles After ‘Bobby’
Kapoor disclosed in Khullam Khulla that he fell into a depression as a result of his subsequent films’ box office failures following his successful debut in Bobby. He had just gotten married to Neetu Singh and because he couldn’t handle his shortcomings he started blaming her which caused tension in their marriage. Neetu was under a lot of emotional stress because she was pregnant. Kapoor acknowledged the support of his friends and family in getting him through this trying time.

Personal Stories and Relationships
Yasmin Mehta, his first girlfriend, was the subject of another personal revelation. He revealed that she had given him a basic ring when they were dating. The ring was worn by co-star Dimple Kapadia during the filming of Bobby but she threw it into the sea close to her Juhu home after getting engaged to Rajesh Khanna. Khanna was rumored to have thrown Kapoor’s ring but Kapoor clarified that Dimple and he had never been romantically involved.
Relationship with Son Ranbir Kapoor
Actor Ranbir Kapoor and his son Rishi Kapoor had a strained relationship the actor also acknowledged. He acknowledged that his inability to spend quality time with Ranbir during his early years due to his work obligations caused him to fail as a father. He went on to say that he had a similar aloof relationship with his father the renowned Raj Kapoor.
Final Wishes Fulfilled
Before he passed away Rishi Kapoor gave his daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahni two last wishes. He wanted the famous Kapoor family home to be fully renovated and for his son Ranbir Kapoor to get married. Following his death his two wishes were granted: the Kapoor family home was restored and Ranbir wed Alia Bhatt.
