Rihanna has broken the norms of maternity style, and what was before the area of robes, most likely with an emphasis on concealing, into a bright demonstration of self-assertion, sexuality, and fashion as art. Not only has it altered the landscape of fashion, her dressing of the baby bump has changed the way the society views the pregnant body in the streets.

Prior to Rihanna, a major aspect of maternity clothing was to focus more on comfort and discretion, often tending to gravitate towards maternal silhouettes, dull colors, and simplistic orientations that were meant to render the visual presence of a growing belly as minimal as possible. The stories were oft times told how to conceal The bump, or, how to make it discreetly felt. Rihanna, however, came to the scene with a completely different attitude: her pregnant women style was the matter to be promoted, to be decorated and to be exhibited on a red carpet.

Since her first announcement of being pregnant, when she appeared in a vintage Chanel puffer jacket that had been tossed open so as to show her bare but jeweled belly, it was evident that Rihanna was following her own book. She always opted for body-conscious shapes, bold cutouts, sheer materials and crop tops, and made the bump look like a feature of her appearance and a gorgeous feature at that. Whether it was the black Dior lingerie she wore to the Paris Fashion Week, lime green beaded halter top she wore to a Fenty Beauty event, or the red cat suit she wore during the Super Bowl halftime event, it was all calculated.

Throughout the three pregnancies, her fashion has been a course on how to mix high fashion and individuality. She has stepped out in couture items by Alaia, Marc Jacobs, and Saint Laurent and touched down in an avant-garde outfit by Stephen Jones and answered that pregnancy is not an impediment to dressing up. All of this, along with her low-rise jeans and crop tops accompanied with belly chains has become iconic because they refute the whole idea that a pregnant woman should be subdued to a specific image.

To refer back to the beauty component of maternity ware—specifically Rihanna’s pregnancy wear—Rihanna’s maternity wear signifies much more than physical aspects of beauty; it is a significant cultural value. When she made the conscious decision to bring attention to her pregnancy in highly visible ways, often very exposed, she has helped challenge the vastly ingrained social constructions of how society expects bodies to behave during pregnancy. Here, in my opinion, it represents a very powerful form of empowerment and resembles larger conversations about bodily autonomy and self-determination.

Rihanna’s influence has extended beyond reaching celebrities. Many pregnant women have expressly mumble to have felt liberated and inspired by Rihanna’s example that they are embracing their bodies at the different stages of growth and maintaining their own uniqueness and distinctive styles, by simply buying clothing one size larger from the regular isle, as opposed to confining themselves to dedicated maternity isles. Designers are also beginning to recognize these influences and perhaps see this as a paradigm shift that we are actually going to think about when the pregnancy impulse strikes as an opportunity for innovation and development of fashion (rather than promoting pregnancy as a problem or disorder that requires specialized, utilitarian garments).
