Nancy Tyagi Cannes Controversy: Stylist Claims Dress Bought, Not Stitched

An Examination of Authenticity and Attribution in Influencer Fashion: The Nancy Tyagi Cannes Outfit Controversy Executive Summary

Nancy Tyagi’s Cannes Gown: Bought, Not Stitched? Stylist, Bhasin Claim Copy

Nancy Tyagi made heads turn at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in a set of shining clothes: a corset mini dress looking beautiful under a long cape. She then went online to explain that her outfit was a joy to design and make. Affleck revealed that from design to completion, it took her a month, as she was putting on the finishing touches “till the last minute as the dress was very heavy”.

Let’s look into the allegations made against the defendant

After Neha Bhasin saw Nancy Tyagi’s Cannes appearance, she started a discussion by remarking on whether the outfit was unique. Tyagi’s entire outfit reminded him of a design previously worn by Bhasin. Things got even more serious when The Source Bombay, a Mumbai fashion rental and resale store, revealed that they sold the dress to Tyagi earlier.

Questions Based on Neha Bhasin’s Claims-

Singer Neha Bhasin sparked the controversy when she shared her doubts about the dress Nancy Tyagi was wearing on Instagram. Bhasin posted photos, including two of the same outfits side by side, pointing out that the outfit she wore in 2005 resembles the Cannes dress Nancy Gerard wore this year. The first thing she said was, “This corset seems very similar to another I own.” Just wondering”. After that, she posted another photo with the title “Same Same” to emphasize the similarities once again.

The small business, The Source Bombay, had its design misrepresented, demonstrating the impact influences can have on the intellectual property and reputation of others in the industry, especially younger and smaller businesses with little resources to protect their claims.

Nancy Tyagi’s Treatment: A “Self-Stitched” Design?

On May 18, 2025, Nancy Tyagi used her Instagram post to validate her claims regarding her attire worn on the Cannes red carpet. Explicit in her post, she wrote that the dress took “a whole month to make,” and that she was “working on it until the very last moment, because the dress was so heavy.” These are statements that showed a significant level of personal attachment, in addition to the amount of work that went into making the garment. She expressed sincere appreciation of “Heartfelt thanks to all the people who were part of this lovely journey, if it wasn’t for you all, this moment would not be so special.”

Surbhi Gupta’s Confirmation (The Source Bombay)

After all the hoopla of Neha Bhasin’s claims, Surbhi Gupta, founder and stylist at The Source Bombay provided solid confirmation in an interview with the Free Press Journal. Gupta stated that Nancy Tyagi had indeed purchased the corset dress component.
