Katherine Heigl, the leading lady in the beloved 2008 romantic comedy “27 Dresses,” recently let slip that there had been conversations about a sequel. The 46-year-old actress told E! News that she would be open to reprising the role of Jane Nichols, the forever bridesmaid who had worn 27 dresses but had never walked down an aisle herself.
“I think that we’re in talks about a ’27 Dresses’ sequel,”, said Heigl, generating buzz from the fans of the original film. It was also stressed that the sequel had to be “done right,” as well as have the original cast, who she says she “really” admires. “If done right and with that cast I love so much, [it] would definitely be something I’d be willing to sort of compromise the mom time to do,” she remarked, conceding that spending time with her three children is her main priority.
The film revolves around Jane, a selfless and romantic woman who has always put others first, especially when it comes to weddings. Her life is turned upside down when her younger sister Tess (Malin Akerman) gets engaged to Jane’s boss George (Edward Burns), with whom Jane has always been secretly in love. While dealing with the upheaval in her life, Jane meets Kevin Doyle (James Marsden), a sardonic journalist who views her “always a bridesmaid” lifestyle as potential fodder for a story. So, as Jane balances her sister’s wedding arrangements with growing feelings for Kevin, she starts to reconsider what she wants out of life and her pattern of always putting others before herself.
Heigl has been expressing interest in continuing the Jane film story since 2019. In a previous interview from 2019 she wanted to explore how Jane’s life had evolved with Kevin ten years down the line. The prospect of examining the couple from the movie 10 years later truly excites me. Do they end up together? She revealed to Entertainment Tonight back in 2019 that her personal belief was Kevin and Jane would end up together. The actress depicted her fantasy where Jane had the role of Tess and George’s third child’s godmother and made frequent plans for their future christenings and baby showers and gender reveal parties.
James Marsden indicated his favorability for a follow-up film to the original movie where he portrayed Kevin. In 2023, he told E! During an E! News interview he explained that the film’s popularity deserves a sequel along with a sequel badge in the genre of romantic comedy. The movie has built a community beyond expectations according to him which surprised him because such films are less common today. The actor suggested a possible follow-up title “27 Children” during his discussions for the movie sequel.

The current discussions about the sequel give hopeful fans who desire to witness Jane and Kevin’s ongoing story a glimmer of possibility for its continuation. The enchanting characters along with marketable characters of self-discovery and love challenges and the magnetic bond between Heigl and Marsden established “27 Dresses” as a hit. Such a continuation would show the progress of their partnership together with their struggles in matrimony and parenthood as well as depict the experiences of either bridesmaids or potentially brides in the future.
For the time being, fans may simply have to wait and see if the initial talks somehow evolve into one full-fledged production. But the very fact that Katherine Heigl is willing to return to her iconic role, and that James Marsden is interested, suggests that there is spirit and goodwill toward actually drawing those well-loved characters of “27 Dresses” back onto the screen.
