Harbhajan Singh: India’s Fierce Spinner Who Ruled the Cricket Field

Harbhajan Singh, who also happens to be better known as The Turbanator a surname that shall go down in Indian cricket history. Born July 3 1980, born at Jalandhar, Punjab, Harbhajan was a fierce right-arm off-spinner and invaluable lower-order batsman, who did duty in all forms of the game on behalf of India between the years 1998 and 2016.
Harbhajan really rocketed when he played in the unforgettable test series in 2001 against the magnanimous Australian Team Led by Steve Waugh. Stepping in after an injured Anil Kumble, he single handedly destroyed the Australian batting which was invincible, the statistics in the series had shown a phenomenal 32 wickets in the series including the first test hat-trick to an Indian bowler. This match got him the tag of Man of the Series but also proved that he will remain the king of off-spin in the Indian team for quite some time.
Harbhajan was a tough bowler who got a lot of acclaim because of his aggressive toss, and he kept building deceitful variations where his most popular was his doosra throughout his glorious career. He formed an essential ingredient to the golden age of India and has done his part in helping the team win the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He has a remarkable record of 417 wickets in 120 Test matches, 269 wickets in 159 one-day internationals, and 25 wickets against 37 matches in T20Is which puts him on the list of the best Indian bowlers. Other than his bowling abilities, he also exhibited remarkable endurance in his bowling with the bat, in that he produced two Test centuries.
The career of Harbhajan, however, had its fair share of controversies most notably the Monkeygate incident in 2008 Australia tour and an ad controversy where Harbhajan was seen without turban. These difficult times notwithstanding, his resilience has continued to rise to the top, and he has managed to come strong again.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Harbhajan was an unswerving supporter of the Mumbai Indians for many years, winning numerous titles through also contributions. He then moved to Chennai Super Kings and then to the Kolkata Knight Riders where he continued to showcase his spun wizardry.

As Harbhajan Singh has moved away from all forms of cricket, he has taken on different roles. He is a widely respected and prominent cricket commentator and analyst, providing reviews and insights on the game. And now those roles have changed again and he has recently branched out into politics being introduced as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha in 2022. He also retains his cricket ambitions leading and captaining the Manipal Tigers in the Legends League Cricket, which are the 2023 champions. How phenomenally impressive is it that Harbhajan Singh has transitioned from when he was an eager young cricketer and gradually built up into a global icon, then into a public figure all while he was an influential sportsman nonetheless.
