Know the truth behind the claim that “Contagion” predicted the coronavirus in 2011


Coronavirus has created mayhem across the world limiting people to stay at their homes to stay away from the outbreak. A movie Contagion has become the new topic of debate as it almost tells the story of ongoing-coronavirus-mayhem. People are surprised because the movie was released in 2011 but the story is almost saying everything that the world is witnessing right now.

What is relevant in the film?

All the tensions about not shaking hands with anyone, not touching face without sanitizing that is going on now, has been described in the movie. What goes withing WHO (World Health Organization) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) when such outbreak happens is also displayed in the movie. There were reports of no toilet papers, sanitizers in the supermarket a few days back. It is also beautifully shown with powerful performances by lead actors in the movie. Also, people stocking up rations these days seems relevant. How infected people suffer when they are isolated, how people who came in touch with the infected are quarantined are also beautifully shown in the movie.

What is not relevant in the film?

The virus which outbreaks in the movie shows 25 to 30 per cent mortality rate and affecting billions of people. However, coronavirus has a mortality rate of only 3 to 4 per cent and the people found positive are limited to thousands only. In the movie, people in chaos start looting the supermarkets and abducting prominent people in exchange for the vaccine. However, in coronavirus case, no vaccine has been found so far.

The 2011 movie “Contagion”, about a pandemic that threatens to wipe out a large population is surging up the charts on iTunes.  It was the eighth most popular movie on iTunes last Friday. While every other movie in the top 20 was from last year, contagion is the only movie to feature from almost a decade back.

The movie is also surging in piracy. MUSO, the piracy analytics company indicated that “Contagion” increased to 30,418 visits on January 30 from mere 546 visits to piracy streaming websites.

The movie has an ensemble cast of Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bryan Cranston and others. It has been written by Scott Z. Burns and directed by Steven Soderbergh.
