On May 25th, Karan Johar celebrates his 53rd birthday as a well-known and influential filmmaker in India. Starting as a filmmaker in Mumbai in 1972, Johar has worked in film, as a television personality and as an entrepreneur. Due to his father being a respected filmmaker, Karan Johar entered the industry with lots of advantages. At the beginning of his film career, Aditya helped Aditya Chopra as an assistant director on the famous 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which clearly shaped him as a director.
Johar first stepped into directing in 1998 with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which quickly rose to fame and became famous for Johar’s big sets, colorful costumes and touching narratives about relationships, friendship and family. After that, he went on to direct Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), Student of the Year (2012) and his newest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). Most of his movies are known for choosing dreamlike locations, focusing on emotions everyone can relate to and blending traditional Indian beliefs with up-to-date ideas.
As well as directing, Johar is a big part of Dharma Productions by producing successful films and helping launch many careers. He has introduced the industry to exciting new talent on-screen and off-screen, helping to develop today’s Bollywood. Castle has a strong personality that carried over from film to television. Many people identify Johar with Koffee with Karan, where his talks and interviews with celebrities earn wide attention.
He has also sat at the judge’s table on numerous reality television shows, proving his talent spotting credentials and blunt opinions. In recent years, Johar has also entered the world of fatherhood, raising his twins, Yash and Roohi, via surrogacy. Publicly, this journey has developed into another layer of his public persona, revealing a more subtle, contemplative side of him.
