India, Pakistan Ceasefire Agreed; De-escalation Begins, Talks Scheduled for May 12
In a big step towards de-escalation, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire on a 5:00 PM Indian Standard Time today, Saturday, May 10, 2025. This is following a time of increased military confrontations led by the deadly terrorist attack in Indian administered Kashmir by terrorists and subsequent retaliations by both sides.
The cease fire agreement was agreed upon after a call between the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan with his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM IST. In this very vital conversation, both parties agreed to stop fire and military activities on the ground, air and sea borders. Instructions has been given to the respective military personnel to enforce this understanding immediately without undue delay.
The DGMOs of India and Pakistan are to meet again on Monday, May 12, at noon, a further manifestation of their commitment to dialogue. This impending contact seems to reflect the openness of the two nations to continue dialogue and, hopefully, resolve the root causes that led to the recent outbreak.
The announcement of the ceasefire is after some claims by a high profile US figure who said that the agreement was reached after it was brokered by the United States. Though this claim gathered steam, official statements by the countries of India and Pakistan about the DGMO level of talks did not mention any US mediations outright. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister’s shared in a social media posting, committed Pakistan to regional peace and security whilst upholding its sovereignty after the ceasefire.
This agreement is a significant step in an effort to de-escalate the conflict that has been on a fast rise in hostility over the last few days. India had initiated “Operation Sindoor,” against alleged terrorism infrastructure, which was soon followed by reported drone attacks on many locations in India and retaliatory strikes on Pakistani airfields.
Pakistan was also said to have enacted its own counter-offensive. The agreement to cease hostilities provides a welcome reprieve to military confrontations that had been escalating for some time now.
The international community is likely to greet this news with cautious optimism, with hopes that this ceasefire will hold, and that it will be pave the way for a more durable period of peace, and stability, in the region. The eventual talks between the DGMOs on May 12 will be watched closely for greater signs that relations could be normalized, and what may be their starting point for work to address the underlying causes of the conflict. For now, the priority is to remain steadfast to the ceasefire, and prevent any further loss of life, and guarantees that there is no further escalation.
