Explained: How Maharashtra loss is a big setback for BJP?
After Devendra Fadanvis resigned from the CM post on Tuesday, BJP lost one more state from its hand. BJP along with its allies was ruling in 21 states before in 2018. The number has come down to 17 after the loss at the state-level political game in Maharashtra. The number may not seem that disheartening but geographically, the BJP has lost big states. The total region ruled by BJP now accounts to a mere 40 per cent which was staggering 71 per cent in December 2017.
The BJP has been on a roller coaster ride of political triumphs after it was elected to power in Centre in 2014. With help from the Modi Wave, the Bhartiya Janta Party swept the nation and won in 21 states, They were in power in only 7 states in 2014. Known as Chanakya Amit Shah and face of the party Narendra Modi had a big role in colouring the country-saffron.
BJP was in power in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgarh, and Arunachal Pradesh in 2014. By September 2018, only Punjab (Congress), West Bengal (TMC), Telangana (TRS), Tamil Nadu (AIADMK), Karnataka (Congress), Kerala (LDF), Mizoram (Congress), and Odisha (BJD) weren’t in saffron colours.
The reign of BJP stopped after reaching 21 states
The data suggests that the journey from 7 to 21 was a gradual journey. 7 in 2014, 13 in 2015, 15 in 2016, 19 in 2017, and finally 21 in 2018. But the reign stopped here. BJP won in those states which were most unexpected such as Mizoram. But the party lost big states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. TDP broke the alliance in Andhra Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir was lost because the President’s rule was imposed.
Even in Karnataka, BJP was tested where B.S. Yediyurappa had to resign after losing in the floor test in 2018. However, BJP returned to power a year later with many JDS and Congress MLAs resigning from their post.

BJP won in the general elections by a huge margin (even better than 2014) but it hasn’t been able to repeat its performance in state elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. BJP could only manage to win 40 seats in Haryana but made the government with unusual JJP’s support.
Maharashtra being called home to a saffron ideologue RSS slipped through BJP’s hand after they lost the game of chess with Shiv Sena and NCP. The seat share dropped from 122 to 105 in this year’s state election.
