Telangana Techie Shot Dead by Cops in California After Dispute With Roommate Sparks Family’s Call for Probe

The Indian community in the United States has been shaken after news emerged that a Telangana techie was shot dead by police in California following an alleged dispute with his roommate. The victim, 30-year-old Mohammed Nizamuddin, hailed from Mahabubnagar in Telangana and had been working in the US as a software professional after completing his higher studies there. His family, still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, raising concerns of racial discrimination.

According to reports, the incident took place on September 3 in Santa Clara, California. Nizamuddin was allegedly involved in a scuffle with his roommate, after which police intervention led to him being shot dead. The details around what exactly triggered the police action remain unclear, but the family in India was informed only weeks later on September 18, leaving them in shock and grief.

Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, shared his anguish in a letter to the Embassy of India in Washington, DC, and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco. He mentioned that he first received the devastating news from one of his son’s friends abroad. Expressing his helplessness, Hasnuddin appealed to India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, to intervene and ensure that his son’s mortal remains are brought back to India at the earliest.

Speaking to media agencies including PTI and ANI, Hasnuddin said, “Today morning I came to know he (Nizamuddin) was shot dead by Santa Clara Police and his mortal remains are in some hospital in Santa Clara, California. I do not know the actual reasons why police shot him dead.” His statement reflects the family’s struggle to understand why the incident escalated to such a tragic level.

The grieving father further explained that Nizamuddin had been in the US since 2016. He had first gone to Florida for higher education, pursued his Master’s degree, and later secured employment as a software professional. Recently, he had moved to California after a promotion, a move that was supposed to advance his career but instead became the setting of his untimely death.

The news has sparked outrage among community representatives in Hyderabad as well. Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan, who shared Hasnuddin’s letter with the media, appealed directly to the Indian government to extend immediate assistance to the family. He emphasized that the circumstances of the incident raise serious concerns that need to be addressed.

Meanwhile, the allegations of racial discrimination put forward by the family have further intensified calls for an impartial probe into the police action. Though US authorities have not released a detailed statement yet, activists and diaspora members believe that the use of deadly force should be questioned, especially when the exact sequence of events remains undisclosed.

For the family in Mahabubnagar, the priority remains bringing their son back home for his final rites. “He studied hard, secured a good job, and was working in the USA. We never thought we would lose him this way,” said Hasnuddin in his appeal to the Ministry of External Affairs. His words highlight the pain many Indian families endure when tragedies strike their loved ones abroad.

The heartbreaking death of Mohammed Nizamuddin has once again brought into focus the vulnerabilities faced by Indians working overseas. While many travel abroad chasing opportunities and dreams, unexpected incidents such as these remind families of the uncertainties their loved ones encounter far from home. As the investigation into the shooting continues, Nizamuddin’s family and the wider Indian diaspora are united in seeking justice, clarity, and dignity for a life cut short.
