On the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Congress stalwart Sonia Gandhi offered praise for his significant accomplishments. Speaking at the 25th Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award ceremony, Sonia Gandhi commemorated Rajiv Gandhi’s achievements despite his political career being tragically cut short.
Sonia Gandhi highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s noteworthy achievements during his brief time in politics before his tragic assassination. She emphasized his sensitivity towards India’s diverse population and his dedication to national development. Despite the untimely end to his political journey, Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions were manifold. Sonia Gandhi noted his commitment to women’s empowerment, particularly his struggle for the implementation of one-third reservation for women in panchayats and municipal bodies.

The outcome of his endeavors is evident today, with more than 15 lakh elected women representatives participating in rural and urban governance, a testament to Rajiv Gandhi’s visionary work. Taking charge of the grand old party in 1984 following his mother Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40. His leadership, though brief, left an indelible mark on the nation.
Tragedy struck on May 21, 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi’s life was cruelly cut short by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

In response to Sonia Gandhi’s commemorative statement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sudhanshu Trivedi cautioned against overlooking the adverse impacts of Rajiv Gandhi’s decisions on India. While acknowledging Sonia Gandhi’s emotional connection to her husband’s legacy, Trivedi urged transparency in evaluating the consequences of his choices. He pointed to the unfortunate events during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure, including the Sikh riots in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, which continue to be a subject of national contemplation.
Sonia Gandhi’s homage to Rajiv Gandhi’s achievements reflects the respect he commands even years after his passing. The BJP’s response underscores the ongoing debate about his legacy, focusing on both his contributions and the challenges that marked his tenure as Prime Minister.
