The Gujarat High Court is scheduled to announce its verdict on Rahul Gandhi’s request for a stay on his conviction in a defamation case. Justice Hemant Prachchhak will deliver the verdict at 11 am. If the court grants the stay and Rahul Gandhi’s conviction is set aside, it could potentially lead to his reinstatement in Parliament.

  1. On March 23, 2023, Rahul Gandhi was found guilty by a district court in Surat in the Modi surname case and was sentenced to two years in jail.

  1. As a result of his conviction, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha, as per the rule that a convicted politician cannot continue to be a parliamentarian.

  1. Rahul Gandhi sought a stay on his conviction from the Surat sessions court. However, on April 20, his plea was rejected by the sessions court, which stated that as a Member of Parliament and the former leader of the country’s second-largest political party, Rahul Gandhi should have been more cautious.

  1. Not giving up, Rahul Gandhi filed an appeal in the Gujarat High Court on April 25, challenging the decision of the Surat sessions court.

  1. In May, the Gujarat High Court rejected Rahul Gandhi’s request for interim relief and stated that the final verdict would be announced after the summer break.

  1. After Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the Purnesh Modi defamation case in Surat, he faced several other defamation cases, including one filed by Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi. The Patna High Court, on July 4, granted a stay on the proceedings of this criminal defamation case until January 12, 2023.

  1. In another defamation case filed by advocate Pradeep Modi, the Jharkhand High Court, on July 4, ordered that no coercive action should be taken against Rahul Gandhi until the next hearing scheduled for August 16.
