J&K Police DSP Adil Mushtaq Arrested for Corruption, Faces Multiple Charges

A J&K Police Deputy Superintendent who has worked in a number of roles, including as a member of the Anti-Hijacking Unit at the Srinagar Airport, was detained on Thursday on suspicion of corruption.

Prior to being arrested, DSP Adil Mushtaq had been detained by the police for three days. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by SP South, was formed, according to the police, in light of the case’s wider implications.

He has been charged with violating the Prevention of Corruption Act’s Sections 7 and 7A as well as the Indian Penal Code’s Sections 167 (falsifying a public document with the intent to harm a person), 193 (falsifying evidence knowingly in a court proceeding), 201 (falsifying the disappearance of evidence of an offence), 210 (falsely obtaining a decree or order against a person for a sum not due), and 218 (incorrect records or writings with the intent to protect individuals from punishment or property from forfeiture), and 221 (failure to apprehend or aiding the escape of someone charged with an offense). A six-day police remand for the accused has been granted.

The task of conducting the investigation has been given to a five-person SIT led by SP South City. The accused has been placed under police custody for six days, the police said.

According to sources, a police squad raided the DSP’s home in uptown Sanat Nagar, seized some papers, a laptop, and other electronics, and interrogated the officer.

Adil had previously drawn controversy and discussion when, in December 2016, while serving as a probationary officer, he removed the tinted film from the car of Kashmir University Vice Chancellor Prof. Khurshid Iqbal on the Jammu-Srinagar route.

As a result of accusations of professional wrongdoing, SP Adil’s career trajectory took a significant change early this year when he was sent to the office of the Special DG Crime. He was thereafter assigned to the Indian Reserve Police (IRP)-17 battalion as DSP.
