INS Vagir, the fifth Scorpene class submarine, was commissioned by the Indian Navy at the start of this year. What are some of its features and specialties? Let’s find out!

When was it commissioned?

INS Vagir was commissioned on 23rd January 2023 at the Naval Dockyard Mumbai. This was a huge celebration for the defense of India as this marks the third submarine that was inducted into the Navy in just a span of 24 months.

What does the name ‘Vagir’ mean?

According to the Indian Navy, the name of the submarine is after a “Sand Shark” whichrepresents Stealth and Fearlessness, two qualities that are synonymous with the ethos of a submariner.

What are the other four submarines of this class?

The other four submarines that have already been commissioned are the Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, and Vela. Vagir marks the fifth in this series, and the sixth and final submarine Vagsheer will be delivered in 2024.

Who is manufacturing these submarines?

Mazagon Dock Limited, one of the leading manufacturers in this sector, is responsible for delivering these submarines. It is working with Naval Group, the designer of these submarines under the Project 75 program in which 6 scorpene class submarines were ordered in 2005.

INS Vagir

The Armies of Malaysia, Chile, and Brazil also have this class of submarines.

Each Scropene is designed according to the requirements of the country and its Navy.

What are the features of INS Vagir?

Like the other ships of this class, INS Vagir has some of the following features which make it one of the leading class of Submarines-

  • It is an attack submarine or “hunter submarine.” It has the capacity to sink enemy vessels.
  • They have an endurance of 50 days.
  • On the surface, it can reach a speed of 11 knots and 20 knots when submerged.
  • It can stay submerged for longer due to the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP). system.
  • It can launch missiles and torpedoes.

Why is this such a massive step for India?

From a strategic and defense point of view, India needs to have more submarines with abilities due to its long coastline and exposure to the waterfront. Beert naval capabilities will allow India to cover the defense triad and be better prepared for an attack.

INS Vagir was made in India and is a huge step towards the success of Atmanirbhar Bharat. With a very low build time, it proves that Indian manufacturers are no less than international sellers. At this rate, we will become more self-reliant and independent.
