Indian PMs who have addressed US Congress in the past started wth Nehru and have now come to Modi, who will be addressing the US Congress for the second time- the first PM to do so.

With PM Modi’s visit to the US, let us also take a look at Indian PMs who have addressed the US Congress in the past. Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to the US is a big affair for the Indian government and during his visit he will also be addressing the US Congress. He is the first Indian PM to have the honour to address the US Congress twice. Before him, there have been other Prime Ministers who have addressed the US Congress- let’s take a look at the list. 

  1. Jawaharlal Nehru 

Nehru was the first PM of India to address the US Congress. For an independent India, this was a major stepping stone toward creating stronger allies and foreign diplomacy. When Nehru had gone there, The House of Chamber was under renovation and he addressed a reception in the Ways and Means Committee Room in the New House Office Building.

2. Rajiv Gandhi 

Gandhi’s visit to the US was another important step for India and its foreign ties. The visit was a huge success and the Reagan administration was thoroughly impressed with his speech and his open-mindedness. 

3. P V Narasimha Rao

The visit of Rao had come at an important time for India- when we were undergoing economic reform. It had become important for India to look towards the future without the baggage of the past and head in the direction of reforms. This is what Rao spoke about in his speech and was greeted by Bill Clinton.

4. Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Vajpayee was a visionary and India during his visit to the US was on a path of new economic growth and boom. He was the second PM to visit under Clinton’s presidency. 

5. Manmohan Singh

When Singh visited the US, his address was focused on the shared relationship between India and the US, global democracy, the future of India, and much more. 

6. Narendra Modi (2016)

As this is the second address of PM Modi, his first address in 2016 was a huge deal as well. At that time, Biden was Vice President, and India and US relationship under Barack Obama had truly flourished.
