India, US Close Friends And Natural Partners: PM Modi Reaffirms Strong Ties Amid Trade Talks

PM Modi calls India and US close friends and natural partners, highlighting progress in trade talks and commitment to stronger ties.

India, US Close Friends And Natural Partners: Modi and Trump Express Optimism on Trade Negotiations and Future Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently described the United States as a “close friend” and a “natural partner” of India, reinforcing the importance of the bilateral relationship that continues to shape global geopolitics. His remarks came after former US President Donald Trump’s post on social media, where Trump referred to Modi as his “very good friend” and expressed confidence about the future of trade talks between the two nations.

Resharing Trump’s message, Prime Minister Modi said he was confident that the ongoing trade discussions would pave the way for unlocking the “limitless potential” of the India-US partnership. He also mentioned that both sides were working to conclude the negotiations at the earliest possible time, signaling the seriousness with which New Delhi is approaching the talks. Modi emphasized his intent to soon speak with Trump to push the relationship forward and secure “a brighter, more prosperous future” for both Indians and Americans.

Donald Trump too, reciprocated Modi’s tone of friendship and partnership by resharing his post. In his own message, Trump highlighted that India and the United States were continuing negotiations to resolve trade barriers. He expressed optimism, stating that he was “certain there will be no difficulty” in reaching a successful conclusion. Looking ahead, Trump noted that he looked forward to speaking with Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks, underscoring the personal rapport the two leaders have often highlighted publicly.

This renewed positivity comes despite recent frictions on the trade front. Trump’s administration had doubled tariffs on Indian goods, raising duties to 50 percent, while also imposing an additional 25 percent levy on India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. These measures were strongly criticized by India, which described the US action as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” Nonetheless, Modi’s latest remarks reflect New Delhi’s pragmatic approach—acknowledging challenges while keeping the larger partnership intact.

India has been firm in its stance that its energy procurement strategy is driven primarily by national interest and market realities. As a developing economy with vast energy needs, India has consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining affordable energy access, regardless of geopolitical pressures. Despite the American tariffs, India continues to uphold the principle that economic sovereignty cannot be compromised, while at the same time ensuring its ties with the US remain steady.

In the past week, Trump himself had acknowledged that India and the US share a “special relationship” and assured that occasional disagreements were only temporary. He suggested that both countries would overcome such challenges, reaffirming that there was “nothing to worry about.” Such statements, alongside Modi’s own comments, indicate a mutual recognition that the partnership is too important to be derailed by trade disputes alone.

The India-US relationship has grown significantly over the past two decades, encompassing defense cooperation, technology exchange, counterterrorism, and people-to-people ties. Trade, however, remains a sticking point, as India seeks greater market access for its goods while the US presses for tariff reductions and intellectual property protections. Despite these hurdles, both governments appear committed to finding common ground, as reflected in the latest exchanges between Modi and Trump.

Strategically, India and the US find themselves aligned on several global issues, including ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific, countering terrorism, and addressing climate change. Both countries also recognize the importance of closer collaboration in technology, energy, and supply chains. These shared interests continue to strengthen the foundation of the bilateral relationship, making it clear why Modi referred to the US as a “natural partner.”

As negotiations continue, the coming weeks may see both leaders engaging more directly to finalize a trade framework that works in favor of both economies. With Trump describing Modi as a “very good friend” and Modi reaffirming that the two countries are “close friends and natural partners,” the outlook for India-US ties remains strong, even amid challenges.
