Heavy Smog Blankets Delhi as Air Quality Enters Severe Zone, Forcing Airport Advisory Amid Poor Visibility
Heavy Smog Blankets Delhi, Visibility Drops Sharply
Delhi woke up to a dense layer of smog on Saturday, with pollution levels worsening across several parts of the city. Heavy smog blankets Delhi, significantly reducing visibility during the early morning hours and raising serious concerns over public health and daily movement. Visuals from multiple locations showed hazy roads, dim skylines, and restricted visibility, signalling a sharp decline in air conditions as the weekend began.
Air Quality Reaches ‘Severe’ Levels Across Key Areas
AQI Crosses 400 in Several Parts of the City
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, air quality in multiple regions of Delhi has crossed into the ‘severe’ category. The Air Quality Index at Anand Vihar was recorded at 434, placing it firmly in the severe zone. Early morning visuals shared by ANI from the area showed thick smog hovering over roads and residential zones, making visibility extremely poor.
ITO and Akshardham Also Report Dangerous AQI
Other central and east Delhi locations reported similarly alarming figures. The AQI near the ITO area was measured at 417, while Akshardham recorded an AQI of 419. These readings indicate that air quality has deteriorated significantly and remains unsafe for outdoor activities. As per the Air Quality Early Warning System, pollution levels are expected to stay in the ‘severe’ category throughout the day.
Delhi Airport Issues Advisory Amid Low Visibility
Low Visibility Procedures Activated
With visibility dropping due to smog and fog-like conditions, Delhi airport issued an advisory on social media platform X to inform passengers about operational measures. The airport confirmed that Low Visibility Procedures are currently in progress to ensure flight safety during reduced visibility conditions.
Passengers Asked to Check Flight Updates
In its advisory, Delhi airport stated that while all flight operations are presently normal, passengers should stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest updates. Travellers were advised to plan their journeys accordingly and remain alert to possible delays caused by weather-related visibility issues.
How Air Quality Levels Are Classified
The Central Pollution Control Board classifies air quality on a scale based on AQI values. An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, while 51 to 100 is ‘satisfactory’. Readings between 101 and 200 fall under ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 are categorised as ‘poor’, and 301 to 400 are labelled ‘very poor’. Any AQI reading between 401 and 500 is considered ‘severe’, posing serious health risks, especially to children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
