New Delhi is currently grappling with a severe air pollution crisis, with the city shrouded in a thick and toxic haze. It’s among the world’s most polluted cities, along with Kolkata and Mumbai. The air quality index (AQI) is alarmingly high, far above recommended levels. This pollution is causing discomfort, especially for residents’ respiratory health.

It’s a concerning situation attributed to a combination of factors like low temperatures, stagnant air, and crop burning in neighbouring regions. The effects are visible, with residents experiencing irritation in their eyes and throats, and the air quality turning a murky grey. 

Health Alert Amid Pollution Crisis

Experts warn that the hazardous AQI levels are detrimental, particularly for those with pre-existing health conditions. To address this crisis, authorities have implemented measures like pausing construction activities, promoting the use of public transportation, and encouraging remote work.

The pollution issue has even affected sporting events, leading to the banning of fireworks during cricket matches in Mumbai and Delhi. The situation is dire, with Bangladesh postponing their training session due to the haze, and little improvement is expected shortly.
