China Reacts to India’s Operation Sindoor, Urges Restraint Amid Rising Tensions

China reacts to India's Operation Sindoor in Pakistan, calls it “regrettable,” urges calm, and stresses need for peace and impartial probe into terrorism.

China Calls India’s Operation Sindoor “Regrettable,” Urges Restraint While Reaffirming Opposition to Terrorism

Regrettably, China has strongly responded to India’s recent military offensive “Operation Sindoor” targeting the terrorists’ camps within Pakistan and the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). It’s an action that China considered regrettable. While it reiterates its opposition to all forms of terrorism, it stresses restraint and peace in the area. Such was the statement made by the Chinese foreign ministry within the Wednesday session, illustrating further China’s delicate diplomatic balancing act between its long-time ally Pakistan and growing strategic concerns with India.

These airstrikes were in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, where several security personnel and civilians were killed. While the operation was clearly intended to send a pretty straight message to the terrorists across the border, China was leaving itself space apparently not to escalate the matters, said the spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry. “China finds India’s military operation this early morning regrettable,” he said. “We continue to have our concern over the developing situation.”

The Speaker further affirmed China’s unhalted stance against terrorism while calling upon both India and Pakistan not to do anything that could aggravate the already complicated status of regional stability. “India and Pakistan are and will always be each other’s neighbours. They are both China’s neighbours as well. We urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability, remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that may further complicate the situation,” the said official rounded it all off.

While the Pahalgam attack has also drawn condemnation from Beijing, usually characterized as Pakistan’s “ironclad ally,” it has done so under its own particularized terms-compelling a dispassionate and prompt inquiry while not necessarily endorsing India’s military action. On April 27-befitting to interventions whose consequences may show very much later in history-Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar updated Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, through a phone call. Afterward, the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the situation.

In his conversation with Dar, Wang Yi reiterated the principle that fighting terror was a collective global responsibility and called for sobriety while emphasizing that the continuing conflict between India and Pakistan does not further the fundamental interests of either side and, in due course, could unhinge the larger South Asian region. “As an ironclad friend and an all-weather strategic cooperative partner, China fully understands Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests”.

Such a diplomatic exchange now highlights the delicate balancing act that is China by all accounts engaging in regarding its own regional interests. Beijing is against terrorism in principle; however, it is very careful not to alienate Islamabad. At the same time, it is wary about escalating hostilities between its two nuclear neighbors. Indeed, the situation continues to develop with great interest from the international community on how further developments will tip the delicate balance of peace in the region.
