Arshad Madani’s remark on ‘Om and Allah’ Sparks Controversy

Arshad Madani: “Only during the BJP government did we learn that 20 crore Muslims should be evacuated.”

Arshad Madani, the president of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, sparked controversy on Sunday at Ramlila Maidan with a remark that seemed to equate Om, Allah, and God. Some religious leaders left the stage angrily on the final day of the organization’s three-day conclave.

What Hindus worship as Om, Muslims worship as Allah,” Mr Madani said. “Whom we call Adam, Hindus call Manu. Adam’s descendants are called aadmi (mankind). Manu’s descendants are manushya (mankind). When there was no Ram, Brahma, or Shiva, whom did Manu worship? Few people tell us they used to worship Om, who had no image. I say, we call Om as Allah, those who speak Persian say Khuda, the English-speaking call God,” he stated.

Speaking to the group, Madani added, “Hindus and Muslims have coexisted in the country as brothers for over 1400 years; we have never converted anyone without their will to Islam.”

“Only during the BJP government did we learn that 20 crore Muslims should be evacuated.  These people don’t know anything about India’s history,” he added.

On the stage, Jain muni Acharya Lokesh Muni, who was also there, disagreed with Madani’s views and remarked, “We only accept peace, but the myth around Om, Allah, and Manu is rubbish. Madani spoiled the session’s atmosphere.”

“I can share even more epic stories than those he mentioned. I would even invite Madani to meet with me for a talk or even go meet him in Saharanpur,” he further said.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), slamming Mr Madani, claimed that his comments on “Om, Allah, and God” had revealed his true beliefs. Was it a “Sadbhavna Sammelan” or a meeting of the poisonous Jamiat group? Vinod Bansal, the nation’s spokesperson for the VHP, stated in a video message on Sunday.

When Mr Madani remarked on the presence of Hindu dharma gurus at the event, Mr Bansal claimed that he was trying to show “his supremacy and that of Islam” and that this revealed his true thought and character. Mr Bansal charged, “You talk about religion and indulge in sinful acts. Shame on you… The mindset of this Jamiat’s gathering will now have to be driven away from this country.”

Mr Bansal also accused that there was an intention to attack the Jain monk at the “Jamiat’s forum”, in a tweet in Hindi, and demanded that Delhi Police investigate the matter.
