Rahul Gandhi Convoy Accident: Uttar Pradesh Police SIT Investigation Begins Into Purvanchal Expressway Pile-Up and Security Lapses During Sultanpur Defamation Case Visit

The Uttar Pradesh Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 26, 2026, to investigate an accident involving vehicles travelling behind Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred while the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha was travelling from Lucknow to Sultanpur for a court hearing in a defamation case.

According to preliminary police information, the collision took place at approximately 10:15 am near Haliyapur in Sultanpur district. A private vehicle at the front of the group reportedly braked suddenly, causing vehicles behind it to collide with one another.

The vehicles involved reportedly included those carrying Congress workers who had joined the convoy along the route. Rahul Gandhi remained safe, and officials said no major injuries were reported. The incident nevertheless raised questions about convoy management, traffic coordination and security arrangements during the journey.

Uttar Pradesh Police SIT: Who Will Lead the Investigation?

The Uttar Pradesh Police SIT was constituted on the directions of Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna. The three-member team has been assigned the responsibility of examining the circumstances that led to the collision and identifying any possible lapses.

The team will be headed by Inspector General of Police, Lucknow Range, Kiran S. Its other members are Sultanpur Additional Superintendent of Police Brij Narayan Singh and Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Ram Krishna Chaturvedi.

The SIT has been instructed to conduct a comprehensive investigation and submit its findings to the police headquarters at the earliest. It will also recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events, examine the role of vehicles accompanying the convoy and determine whether any procedural shortcomings contributed to the accident.

Security Lapses and Traffic Management Under Scanner

One of the primary objectives of the SIT investigation is to determine whether the incident resulted from negligence or weaknesses in security and traffic arrangements.

The probe will examine several aspects, including police escort arrangements, coordination between vehicles, traffic management and the handling of vehicles that joined the convoy midway.

During the movement of a high-profile political leader, coordination between security personnel, accompanying vehicles and traffic authorities is important for maintaining a safe journey. Sudden braking or inadequate spacing between vehicles can create risks, particularly when multiple vehicles are travelling together.

However, the precise cause of the Purvanchal Expressway pile-up has not yet been conclusively established. The investigation will determine whether any individual or official failed to follow the required procedures.

Any conclusions regarding negligence or security lapses will depend on the findings of the SIT rather than preliminary accounts alone.

Rahul Gandhi Was Travelling to Sultanpur for a Defamation Case

The accident occurred while Rahul Gandhi was travelling to Sultanpur to attend proceedings in a criminal defamation case dating back to 2018.

The case concerned alleged remarks about Amit Shah, who was the BJP’s national president at the time of the incident. The complaint was filed by local BJP leader Vijay Mishra following remarks Gandhi allegedly made during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign.

According to reports published on October 26, 2026, a special MP/MLA court in Sultanpur acquitted Rahul Gandhi in the case. The court reportedly held that the remarks did not constitute defamation.

The legal proceedings and the convoy accident were separate developments during the same visit. While the court case concerned the allegations against Gandhi, the police investigation will focus on the road collision and possible lapses in convoy management.

Purvanchal Expressway Pile-Up Raises Questions About Convoy Safety

The incident has renewed attention on road safety protocols for political convoys travelling on major expressways.

Convoys often include security vehicles, private vehicles and cars carrying party workers. When vehicles join a moving group at different points, maintaining consistent speed, safe distances and clear communication becomes particularly important.

The Purvanchal Expressway is a major road corridor in Uttar Pradesh, connecting areas across the state and supporting long-distance travel. Incidents involving multiple vehicles can disrupt traffic and create safety risks for other road users.

The SIT’s findings could help authorities identify whether better coordination, clearer escort procedures or stricter controls over accompanying vehicles are needed.

What Happens Next in the SIT Investigation?

The Uttar Pradesh Police SIT will examine the available evidence, reconstruct the events leading to the collision and assess whether any negligence or procedural failure occurred. Its report is expected to guide further decisions by the police headquarters.

For now, the investigation remains focused on establishing the facts. No final conclusions about responsibility should be drawn until the team completes its inquiry.

The Rahul Gandhi convoy accident has placed security arrangements and traffic coordination under scrutiny. The findings of the Uttar Pradesh Police SIT will be important in determining the cause of the Purvanchal Expressway pile-up and identifying measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
