SA20 2027 Auction: Pollard, Rowles Headline Joburg Super Kings Buys
SA20 2027 Auction sees Pollard and Rowles join Joburg Super Kings, while MI Cape Town, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals add stars.
SA20 2027 Auction: Pollard, Rowles Headline Joburg Super Kings Buys
The SA20 2027 Auction delivered plenty of excitement as franchises made important additions to their squads ahead of the fifth season of the South African T20 league. The auction, held in Johannesburg on October 7, saw 19 players sold, with Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals participating in the bidding.
Among the biggest talking points were the arrivals of West Indies T20 star Kieron Pollard and promising South African all-rounder Jason Rowles at Joburg Super Kings. Rowles eventually became the most expensive player of the auction, while experienced campaigner Faf du Plessis also made a return to the Super Kings.
Jason Rowles Becomes the Biggest SA20 2027 Auction Buy
The biggest surprise of the SA20 2027 Auction was 18-year-old Jason Rowles. The young South African all-rounder attracted strong interest from Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town before JSK secured his services for R2.9 million.
Rowles entered the auction with a base price of R200,000 but his final price rose dramatically after an intense bidding battle. His purchase highlighted the growing importance of young South African talent in the SA20 setup.
For Joburg Super Kings, the investment represents both an immediate squad addition and a long-term opportunity to develop a promising player.
Kieron Pollard Brings Experience to Joburg Super Kings
Another headline move was Joburg Super Kings’ signing of Kieron Pollard for R1.5 million. The experienced West Indies all-rounder is widely regarded as one of the most successful players in T20 cricket.
Pollard brings considerable experience in franchise cricket, along with powerful batting, useful bowling options and strong leadership qualities. His move to Joburg Super Kings adds an established international presence to the franchise.
The signing is particularly notable because Pollard has been closely associated with Mumbai Indians teams around the world. His move to JSK therefore adds another interesting dimension to the upcoming SA20 season.
Faf du Plessis Returns to Joburg Super Kings
Joburg Super Kings also made a major move by bringing back former captain Faf du Plessis for R2.7 million.
Du Plessis previously played a major role for the franchise and his return gives JSK another experienced top-order batter. His leadership background and familiarity with the franchise could make him an important part of the team’s campaign in 2027.
With Rowles, Pollard and du Plessis among their notable additions, Joburg Super Kings emerged as one of the biggest stories from the auction.
MI Cape Town Make Major Additions
MI Cape Town were also aggressive during the auction. The franchise secured South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for R2.6 million, making him one of the most expensive players of the event.
MI Cape Town also added West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer and New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult, both for R1.5 million.
These additions give the team a combination of explosive batting and international bowling experience. Hetmyer’s ability to accelerate during the middle and late overs could be particularly valuable, while Boult adds quality and experience to the pace attack.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape Strengthen Their Squad
Defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape had fewer vacancies to fill but still made useful additions.
The franchise signed England all-rounder Craig Overton for R1.5 million and South African fast bowler Nandre Burger for R500,000. Both players provide additional depth in different areas.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape have already established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the competition, and these additions could help maintain their balance heading into the 2027 season.
Pretoria Capitals Add Experience and Youth
Pretoria Capitals also used the auction to improve their squad. Former Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen was signed for R500,000, while Temba Bavuma joined for R200,000.
The Capitals also added Josh Breed, Ackeem Auguste and West Indies all-rounder Keemo Paul.
Van der Dussen and Bavuma bring international experience, while the younger additions give Pretoria more options for squad development. The Capitals will be hoping these changes help them challenge for the title after finishing as runners-up in the previous season.
Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals Had No Auction Bids
Unlike the four franchises involved in the auction, Durbans Super Giants and Paarl Royals had already completed their 19-player squads through pre-auction signings and wildcard selections.
As a result, they did not participate in the player bidding process. Their squads were already finalized before the auction took place.
What the SA20 2027 Auction Means for the New Season
The auction has added another layer of excitement ahead of SA20 2027. Joburg Super Kings made perhaps the biggest statement by signing Rowles, Pollard and du Plessis, while MI Cape Town strengthened their squad with Mulder, Hetmyer and Boult.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape focused on targeted additions, while Pretoria Capitals combined established Proteas players with emerging talent.
With all six teams now shaping their final squads, the upcoming SA20 season promises another competitive battle. The presence of international stars alongside South Africa’s emerging players should make SA20 2027 one of the most closely followed editions of the tournament.
