Delhi Police Steps Up Security Ahead Of Anti-CEC Protests, Over 3,000 Personnel Deployed

Delhi Police security tightened as Opposition protests target the Chief Election Commissioner, with 3,000+ personnel deployed near Jantar Mantar.

Delhi Police Security Tightened Ahead of Opposition Protests Against Chief Election Commissioner as Over 3,000 Personnel Deployed Near Jantar Mantar and Parliament

Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened across central Delhi ahead of a planned protest march by Opposition leaders against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. More than 3,000 security personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas, with reports putting the overall deployment of Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces at around 4,000 personnel.

The heightened security comes as INDIA bloc MPs prepare to march from the Makar Dwar area of the Parliament of India towards the Election Commission headquarters. The demonstration is linked to Opposition concerns over electoral roll revisions and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Opposition Protests Focus on Election Commission

The latest Opposition protests are centred on demands concerning the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties have raised allegations about the voter-list revision process and questioned whether the exercise could affect eligible voters.

The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations of wrongdoing. The poll panel has maintained that the revision process is intended to identify duplicate, ineligible and otherwise problematic entries while protecting the rights of eligible voters.

The political dispute has now moved beyond Parliament, with repeated demonstrations and planned marches increasing security requirements in New Delhi.

Heavy Police Deployment Near Parliament and ECI Office

Delhi Police have positioned personnel at several strategic locations around Parliament, the Election Commission headquarters and major roads leading towards the protest areas. Multiple layers of barricades have been installed to regulate movement and prevent protesters from entering restricted zones.

Rapid Action Force personnel and other security units have also been deployed at sensitive points. Police are monitoring movement around locations such as Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, Akashvani Bhawan and Vijay Chowk as part of the broader law and order arrangements.

Authorities have also issued traffic-related advisories for central Delhi, with movement expected to be regulated or diverted around areas affected by the march.

Jantar Mantar Protest Adds to Security Concerns

Jantar Mantar has remained a key location in the ongoing demonstrations against the Chief Election Commissioner. Earlier in October, Delhi Police denied permission for a proposed gathering at the venue and introduced additional security measures after organisers indicated that thousands of people could attend.

Reports from October 2 said police expected between 3,000 and 4,000 participants, leading to the deployment of Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces, along with extensive barricading.

The authorities have also used prohibitory orders in parts of central Delhi to prevent unauthorised gatherings. These measures are intended to maintain public order while allowing authorised political activity to take place within legal and security restrictions.

Traffic Restrictions Expected in Central Delhi

The large-scale police deployment is also expected to affect traffic in several parts of the capital. Routes around Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, Parliament Street and nearby roads are being closely monitored.

Commuters travelling through central Delhi have been advised to remain alert to traffic advisories and possible diversions. Earlier security arrangements around Jantar Mantar also resulted in restrictions at several Metro stations and changes to road movement.

Such restrictions are generally introduced to separate protest routes from regular traffic and reduce the possibility of clashes or overcrowding.

Law and Order Remains a Major Priority

For Delhi Police, maintaining law and order is a key priority as political demonstrations continue around the Election Commission issue. The police have already registered FIRs in connection with previous attempts to hold unauthorised demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.

Earlier protests also resulted in detentions after demonstrators attempted to move through police barricades. Authorities have therefore increased surveillance, barricading and personnel deployment around sensitive government and public locations.

Political Dispute Continues

The latest protest highlights the growing political dispute surrounding electoral roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission. Opposition parties say they want greater transparency and accountability, while authorities maintain that security measures are necessary to prevent disruption and ensure public safety.

With Opposition MPs expected to participate in the march, central Delhi remains under heightened security on October 6. The situation around Parliament, the Election Commission headquarters and Jantar Mantar is being closely monitored as police prepare to manage crowds and maintain normal movement across the capital.
