India’s Essar to Build $18B Steel Plant in US, Trump Calls It ‘Largest’ in American History

Essar Group's $18B steel plant in Iowa, backed by Mesabi Metallics, will link Rewant Ruia's Minnesota iron ore mine with US manufacturing.

India’s Essar Group Announces $18 Billion US Steel Investment

India’s industrial conglomerate Essar Group is making a significant investment in the American steel industry through its subsidiary, Mesabi Metallics. The company plans to establish a large integrated steel manufacturing operation in Iowa, United States, as part of an investment valued at approximately $18 billion.

US President Donald Trump announced the development at the White House on September 28, 2026, describing the proposed facility as the largest steel plant in American history. The announcement highlights the growing role of international investment in US manufacturing and the development of domestic industrial supply chains.

The investment combines a proposed $15 billion steel complex in Iowa with approximately $3 billion already invested in an iron ore mine and pelletising operations in Minnesota.

The proposed steel plant will be developed in eastern Iowa and is designed to establish an integrated production system connecting raw material extraction with finished steel manufacturing.

According to the announcement, the facility is expected to begin production around 2030. Its initial production capacity is projected at approximately 7.5 million tonnes annually, with the potential to increase to around 10 million tonnes as development progresses.

The development is also expected to introduce advanced steelmaking technology, supporting the company’s plans for large-scale industrial production.

Rewant Ruia Leads Essar’s American Expansion

Rewant Ruia , chairman of Mesabi Metallics, represented the company during the White House announcement alongside Essar Group leadership.

Ruia highlighted the importance of building industrial infrastructure in the United States and described the investment as a significant commitment to American manufacturing.

The project reflects Essar’s international business expansion and its experience in steel, energy, mining and infrastructure. The group’s involvement in the US steel sector includes developing the Minnesota iron ore operation that will supply the proposed Iowa facility.

The announcement also included Essar Group vice-chairman Ravi Ruia and senior American government representatives.

A major component of the investment is Mesabi Metallics’ iron ore mine and pelletising facility in Minnesota.

The company recently opened what it describes as the first new iron ore mine in the United States in approximately 50 years. The operation is expected to provide raw materials for the Iowa steel complex, establishing a domestic supply chain from mining to finished steel production.

Instead of depending entirely on imported raw materials and overseas processing, the proposed arrangement is designed to keep key stages of steel production within the United States.

Donald Trump Highlights US Manufacturing and Job Creation

During the announcement, Donald Trump emphasized the project’s potential contribution to American industrial development.

The White House estimates that the Iowa steel plant could generate approximately 1,750 permanent jobs and support up to 6,000 construction jobs. The broader investment is also projected to contribute approximately $95 billion to the US economy over the next decade, according to administration estimates.

The administration has also connected the investment to its wider emphasis on domestic production and reshoring manufacturing operations.

Steel Production Capacity and Industrial Significance

Once fully developed, the facility is expected to produce approximately 10 million tonnes of steel annually.

Its planned scale places it among the largest single-site steel manufacturing developments in the United States. The project is intended to serve industrial customers while strengthening domestic steel production capacity.

Essar Group’s investment demonstrates how Indian companies are participating in major international manufacturing projects.

The development also highlights the relationship between foreign investment, American industrial policy and domestic production objectives. While the company brings investment and industrial experience, the project is structured around American mining resources, manufacturing operations and employment.

With production targeted for around 2030, the Iowa steel plant will remain a major long-term development project.

Its progress will be watched by the steel industry, investors and manufacturing businesses interested in the future of US industrial capacity.
