Former Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta died by suicide at his residence in Noida, with police recovering a note that reportedly referred to prolonged health problems. Mehta, a 1975-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was found dead at his rented accommodation in Sector 82, Noida, on September 6, 2026. He was 74, according to several reports.
The death of the former senior bureaucrat has drawn attention to his long administrative career and his contribution to several major civic, transport and infrastructure initiatives in Delhi.
Rakesh Mehta Suicide: What Happened In Noida?
According to police, Rakesh Mehta was living alone in a rented flat at Kendriya Vihar-2 in Sector 82, Noida, where he had reportedly stayed for around five years. His family became concerned after they were unable to contact him by telephone.
Police were alerted after repeated calls went unanswered. Security personnel subsequently went to the residence, where Mehta was found dead. A forensic team examined the premises and collected evidence as part of the investigation. His body was later sent for postmortem examination.
Police have said that the circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated.
Suicide Note Recovered From Rakesh Mehta’s Home
A key part of the investigation is a one-page note recovered from Mehta’s residence. Reports quoting police said the note referred to prolonged illness and stated that no one was responsible for his death.
Family members reportedly told officials that Mehta had been dealing with several health problems. Reports have mentioned conditions including hypertension and diabetes, along with other health-related difficulties. Police are examining the note and other evidence as part of their inquiry.

Who Was Rakesh Mehta?
Rakesh Mehta was a 1975-batch IAS officer who held several important positions during his long career in public administration. He served in different capacities in the Delhi government and was also associated with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Mehta eventually became Delhi’s Chief Secretary in 2007 under then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. He remained in the position until 2010, making him one of the senior officials overseeing the capital during an important period of infrastructure development.
His career included responsibilities connected with transport, power, municipal administration and other areas of governance.
Rakesh Mehta’s Role In Delhi’s Infrastructure Development
During his administrative career, Mehta was associated with several major changes in Delhi’s public infrastructure.
