The Satya Niketan Collapse investigation has taken a significant turn after Delhi Police identified two paying guest (PG) operators who had leased the five-storey building that collapsed in South Delhi. According to police sources, the property was leased in August 2025 to business partners Shubham Tyagi and Sudhanshu, who subsequently operated the premises as a boys’ PG under the name Hostel Daze. Sudhanshu has been arrested, while Tyagi is currently absconding.
Owner’s Son Names Two PG Operators
Mahesh Gupta, the son of the building owner, was responsible for looking after the property’s maintenance on behalf of his parents. During questioning, he reportedly told investigators that the building had been leased to Tyagi and Sudhanshu in August 2025.
The two operators allegedly converted the premises into a boys’ PG accommodation. Police are now examining the lease arrangement, the responsibilities of the operators and the circumstances surrounding repair and construction activities carried out at the property.
The development is important to the Satya Niketan Collapse investigation because authorities are examining the roles of the property owners, PG operators, contractors and others involved with the building.
Sudhanshu Arrested, Tyagi Remains Absconding
Delhi Police have arrested Sudhanshu, one of the two business partners operating Hostel Daze. Investigators are continuing efforts to locate Shubham Tyagi, who remains absconding, according to the latest reports.
A labour contractor connected with repair work at the building has also been apprehended as police investigate activities that took place before the collapse. Officials are particularly examining repair work in the basement and whether it affected the structural stability of the ageing building.
Seven People Died In Satya Niketan Collapse
The five-storey building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area collapsed on September 6, killing seven people and injuring others. The building was being used as a PG accommodation and was located near Delhi University’s South Campus, an area popular among students.
The tragedy has raised serious questions about the safety of student accommodation, structural inspections, unauthorised construction and enforcement of building regulations in Delhi.
Police Probe Repair And Construction Work
Police are investigating repair activities that were reportedly underway shortly before the collapse. According to investigators, work had been taking place in the basement after waste and water accumulated there during the rainy season. Repairs were reportedly being carried out for several days.
Authorities are also examining allegations that additional floors had been constructed on the decades-old structure. Preliminary reports have pointed to concerns involving the building’s age, structural condition, additional construction and basement work. However, the precise cause of the collapse remains subject to the ongoing investigation.
Building Owners Also Arrested
The investigation had already resulted in the arrest of Hariram Gupta, his wife Urmila Gupta and their son Mahesh Gupta. Police said the property was registered in Urmila Gupta’s name, while Hariram and Mahesh were involved in managing the premises.
The arrests have widened the investigation into how the property was operated, maintained and leased as a PG accommodation. Authorities are also examining whether construction or renovation activities contributed to the collapse.
Focus On PG Safety In Delhi
The Satya Niketan Collapse has renewed concerns about the safety of PG accommodations across Delhi. Following the tragedy, authorities have ordered reviews of PG buildings, including checks related to building safety, permissions, fire-safety requirements and structural stability certificates.
