The upcoming Asian Games in Japan has attracted attention not only for the return of cricket but also for accommodation and logistical arrangements. The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) has clarified that participating cricket teams are not required to stay in hotels arranged by the organisers.
JCA CEO Naoki Alex Miyaji said teams have the freedom to make their own hotel arrangements if they prefer. The clarification comes after concerns were reportedly raised by several major Asian cricket boards about the accommodation provided for the tournament.
The issue is particularly relevant because cricket teams travel with substantial equipment, including large kitbags, alongside personal luggage. Reports have questioned whether the rooms allocated to players would offer sufficient space for international squads.
Japan Cricket Association Offers Flexibility
The Japan Cricket Association has emphasised that participating teams are being offered hotel accommodation through the tournament arrangements. However, teams can choose alternative accommodation according to their requirements.
Miyaji explained that cricket is not being treated differently from other sports participating in the Games. According to the JCA, some athletes from other disciplines will have to use more limited accommodation options, including a cruise ship and temporary facilities.
This flexibility gives cricket boards greater control over their preparations. Teams that believe another hotel would provide better room space, transport convenience or facilities for players and support staff can explore their own arrangements.
Distance From The Cricket Venue
Another concern surrounding the Asian Games cricket arrangements is the distance between the designated accommodation and the playing venue.
Cricket matches will be staged at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin City, Aichi Prefecture. Reports indicate that the designated hotels for cricket teams are approximately 20 kilometres from the venue.
For international cricket teams, transportation is an important consideration. Players need to travel for training, practice sessions and matches, while support staff also require reliable access to the ground.
The option of booking independent hotels could therefore allow teams to select accommodation that better suits their logistical needs.
JCA Responds To Venue Facility Concerns
Accommodation is not the only issue that has attracted attention ahead of the tournament. Questions have also been raised about facilities at the cricket venue, including temporary dressing-room infrastructure and toilet access.
The Japan Cricket Association has rejected suggestions that players would need to travel a significant distance to use toilets. Miyaji stated that toilet facilities will be available within the player area, with both temporary and permanent facilities around the venue.
The venue itself has been developed within a relatively short timeframe. According to Miyaji, organisers had around 17 months to prepare a cricket facility from scratch because Aichi Prefecture previously did not have a cricket venue of recognised standard.
Sri Lanka Cricket Supports Pitch Preparation
Despite concerns about the venue, the JCA has expressed confidence in the playing surface. Sri Lanka Cricket has contributed expertise through its curators, who helped prepare the turf and hybrid pitches.
Miyaji said the ground would feature a full-size playing area and praised Sri Lanka Cricket for its contribution to the pitch preparation. The JCA believes the playing surface can provide a strong platform for cricket during the Games.
The venue has also gained some match experience, having hosted cricket during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier earlier in 2026. This provides organisers with an opportunity to assess and improve arrangements before the Asian Games competition begins.
Cricket’s Importance At The Asian Games
Cricket is expected to be one of the major attractions at the 2026 Asian Games. The tournament will bring some of Asia’s leading cricket teams to Japan, increasing the sport’s visibility in a country where cricket remains a developing discipline.

The Japan Cricket Association has also focused on promoting cricket among local communities. Its programmes have introduced the sport to schools and shopping centres, helping build interest ahead of the Games.
The JCA’s official website lists the 2026 Asian Games among its major upcoming activities, with Japan’s men’s and women’s teams scheduled to compete in the cricket tournament.
Asian Games Preparations Continue
The accommodation debate comes as organisers face broader logistical challenges. More than 17,000 athletes and officials are expected at the Games, exceeding the originally projected number. Organisers have therefore planned a mixture of hotels, temporary accommodation and cruise-ship facilities rather than relying on a traditional central athletes’ village.
For cricket teams, however, the Japan Cricket Association’s latest clarification provides an important degree of flexibility. Teams can use organiser-provided hotels or make their own arrangements based on their individual requirements.
As preparations continue, attention will remain on the playing conditions, accommodation, transportation and overall organisation. The JCA is confident that close cooperation between the organisers, Asian Cricket Council and participating teams can help deliver a successful cricket tournament at the Asian Games.
