Cloudburst Triggers Flash Floods in Uttarakhand Dehradun: Tapkeshwar Temple Inundated, Rescue Operations in Full Swing

A devastating cloudburst triggered flash floods in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, leaving behind a trail of destruction in several parts of the district. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, caused heavy damage to residential areas, roads, and shops. The picturesque Sahastradhara area, a well-known tourist spot, was particularly affected as landslides destroyed houses, washed away cars, and swept away several small businesses. According to officials, two people have gone missing in the aftermath, while search operations are actively underway. Both SDRF and NDRF teams have been deployed to carry out rescue and relief work on an urgent basis.

The impact of the downpour was most visible in Sahastradhara, where shops, restaurants, and hotels bore the brunt of nature’s fury. Tourists and locals were caught off guard by the sudden flooding as water levels rose overnight, causing panic and severe damage to infrastructure. Roads were left in ruins, making access to several interior areas extremely difficult. Authorities are working round the clock to clear debris and restore basic connectivity.

The sacred Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun also witnessed unprecedented flooding. Heavy rainfall caused the Tamsa River, which flows beside the temple, to swell and overflow into the temple premises. The floodwaters entered the courtyard and even reached the statue of Lord Hanuman. While the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine remained safe, the incident has alarmed devotees and local residents. The temple, one of Dehradun’s most revered spiritual sites, attracts hundreds of visitors daily, and its partial inundation reflects the severity of the disaster.

The damage extended further to vital infrastructure. The bridge near Fun Valley and Uttarakhand Dental College on the Dehradun–Haridwar National Highway was damaged due to the force of the floodwaters. This disruption has not only affected local commuters but also hindered transportation for emergency services. Meanwhile, in Rishikesh, the Chandrabhaga river swelled dangerously, leading to water reaching the highway and trapping people in the rising current. SDRF personnel successfully rescued three stranded individuals, but several vehicles remain stuck in the water, adding to the challenges faced by disaster management authorities.

The state leadership has been quick to respond to the crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally spoke with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to take stock of the situation in Uttarakhand Dehradun and other flood-hit areas. The Chief Minister has been conducting on-site inspections across affected regions, accompanied by senior officials and local MLAs. He has directed that no family should be left unattended and ordered immediate distribution of relief materials. Shelter homes, food packets, drinking water, and healthcare facilities are being provided on priority to ensure affected residents receive timely assistance.

This tragic incident comes only days after a similar cloudburst in Uttarkashi’s Dharali area on August 5, which triggered devastating flash floods and landslides.
