Nepal Army Fire Shots At Ramechap Prison as inmates tried to escape amid unrest, leaving over a dozen injured during Nepal’s ongoing turmoil.

Nepal Army Fire Shots At Ramechap Prison Inmates During Escape Attempt Amid Nationwide Protests And Political Turmoil

The political unrest in Nepal has taken a dangerous turn after the Nepal Army fire shots at Ramechap prison inmates who attempted to escape amid nationwide protests and instability. The incident occurred on Thursday when prisoners tried to exploit the chaos caused by the ongoing unrest and a temporary power vacuum in the country. According to officials, the army intervened to prevent a mass breakout, leaving several inmates wounded in the process. The Kathmandu Post reported that the troops fired to control the situation after prisoners broke through internal locks and reached the prison gate.

Chief District Officer Shyam Krishna Thapa confirmed that around 12 to 13 prisoners sustained injuries as they attempted to forcefully exit the facility. He stated that the inmates had already smashed several internal locks and were dangerously close to breaking open the main gate before the security forces were compelled to fire. Following the incident, police and army officials moved quickly to restore order, and authorities later announced that the situation was under control.

This attempted mass prison escape in Ramechhap is not an isolated case. Local media revealed that hundreds of inmates have already managed to escape from different prisons across the country, including those in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lalitpur. The widespread unrest and breakdown of law enforcement have created serious challenges for Nepal’s internal security. Neighboring India has also been placed on high alert, particularly along its porous border with Nepal.

India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) confirmed that it had apprehended 22 escaped Nepali prisoners near the Indo-Nepal border at Siddharthnagar in Uttar Pradesh. The force has strengthened deployment, sealed sensitive border areas, and increased patrolling to ensure that more fugitives do not cross into Indian territory. Officials noted that the situation in Nepal has direct implications for regional security, making border vigilance crucial during this volatile time.

Meanwhile, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah issued an emotional appeal to Nepal’s Gen Z protesters and the wider public. Posting on social media, Shah acknowledged that the country is facing an unprecedented crisis but urged citizens to remain calm and patient. He reminded them that Nepal is in the process of forming an interim government, which will eventually hold fresh elections to restore stability and legitimacy. His statement was directed particularly at young demonstrators, asking them not to let frustration fuel further violence.

The roots of the crisis go deeper than the prison break. Nepal has been reeling under youth-led protests that began after the government briefly banned social media platforms, sparking outrage among Gen Z. The ban added fuel to long-standing anger over corruption, unemployment, and lack of accountability within the government. The demonstrations quickly escalated, prompting authorities to impose curfews and deploy the army in Kathmandu and other major cities.

The violence has already taken a heavy toll on the nation. Reports indicate that nearly 25 people have lost their lives, while over 600 others have been injured in clashes between protesters and security forces. Public anger remains high despite efforts by political leaders to calm the streets. Authorities were even forced to shut down Kathmandu airport temporarily during the peak of unrest, though it has since reopened under tight security.

Despite these challenges, prohibitory orders remain in place in several districts, and security forces continue to monitor the situation closely. The government’s next steps—particularly the announcement of interim leadership and the timeline for elections—will be critical in determining whether Nepal can move toward stability or sink deeper into political chaos.

The incident where the Nepal Army fire shots at Ramechap prison serves as a reminder of the fragile state of law and order in the country. As both the public and authorities struggle to cope with the unrest, the coming weeks will prove crucial for Nepal’s future. The ability of the interim government to restore trust, address grievances, and manage security challenges will decide whether peace can be restored or further instability will follow.
