Kota’s JEE Success Story: Excellence or Overdependence?
Kota’s JEE Dominance: Excellence or Overdependence on Coaching Hubs?
Kota’s JEE Factories: Producing Half of India’s Top IIT Rankers
Kota’s JEE success story continues to dominate headlines in 2025. Every year, lakhs of students across India appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced), hoping to secure admission into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). In this high-stakes race, one city has repeatedly stood out for its overwhelming dominance: Kota, Rajasthan. Famous as India’s “coaching capital,” Kota has once again emerged as the powerhouse behind IIT admissions this year. Apoorva reports on how the city continues to shape the dreams of aspiring engineers and why its influence shows no signs of slowing down.
This year’s JEE Advanced was administered by IIT Kanpur and the results of their recent analysis are astounding. A sizable portion of the successful applicants out of the 1 million 87 lakh registered candidates received their training in Kota. Indeed Kota was the source of one in four of the students enrolling at IIT this year. Even more startling is the fact that half of the top 100 rankers were coached in the city. These numbers confirm Kota’s unparalleled standing within the Indian competitive exam preparation ecosystem.
Delhi is at the Forefront
A different IIT oversees each of the various zones across the nation where the JEE Advanced exam is administered. The Delhi Zone had the highest success rate this year thanks in large part to Kota’s coaching factories. Over 4100 seats at IITs were obtained by more than 11000 candidates who passed JEE Advanced from this zone.
More than 45000 students registered in the Hyderabad Zone which had the highest registration rate. Despite this sizable base the Delhi Zone – driven by applicants with Kota training – was the one that turned the largest percentage into admissions. This demonstrates not only how well-liked Kota’s coaching facilities are but also how consistently they produce positive outcomes year after year.
Why Is Kota Such a Success?
The answer is found in a confluence of elements that work together to produce a demanding but productive training environment. Some of India’s largest coaching centers renowned for their intense practice sessions, individualized mentoring and demanding study plans are located in Kota. Here students typically devote 12 to 14 hours each day to self-study doubt-clearing sessions and classes.
The competitive environment among peers is equally significant. Being surrounded by thousands of students who share their ambitions motivates aspirants to do better. The coaching culture is closely linked with the ecosystem which includes libraries, hostels, mess facilities and even the local economy of the city. Kota operates largely as a parallel educational system with the express purpose of producing IIT rankers.
The Kota Model on the Other Side
The figures show success but they also raise important issues. Increasing reliance on hubs like Kota according to critics indicates that the system favors those who can afford costly coaching and relocation rather than leveling the playing field for all applicants. Does the IIT entrance exam now measure talent and aptitude or just the capacity to withstand years of intense coaching?
The human cost is another. Because of its students’ mental health issues Kota has frequently made headlines. Teenagers can suffer from a lack of social life, long study sessions and pressure to perform. Sadly burnout and stress-related problems are widespread and the city has come under fire for not doing enough to protect the wellbeing of its students.

A Mark of Greatness or a Red Flag?
A broader discussion concerning India’s educational system is sparked by Kota’s dominance. On the one hand it exhibits superiority in discipline, competitive spirit and structured training. As a route to the IITs Kota offers thousands of students hope for successful careers and upward mobility.
However it also highlights the over-reliance on tutoring centers to ace tests that were initially intended to assess aptitude and problem-solving skills. Are we inadvertently excluding gifted students from smaller towns who lack the means to attend these hubs if half of the top 100 rankers come from a single city implying unequal access to opportunities elsewhere?

Gazing Ahead
Kota’s story is unlikely to alter in the near future. Students from all over the nation will continue to flock to the city because of the high demand for IIT seats and the willingness of parents to make significant financial investments in their kids’ futures. Finding a balance between this dominance and initiatives to provide high-quality education in all areas is the true challenge. It is imperative that educators and policymakers prioritize student mental health, increase access to affordable online resources and improve instruction at the school level.
Kota will continue to serve as a symbol of systemic issues and a lighthouse of opportunity until that time. India must immediately consider whether this indicates genuine educational excellence or an excessive reliance on coaching centers despite its undeniable success in influencing the country’s engineering future.
