Maldives’ Muizzu Calls India Closest Ally, Praises PM Modi’s Crisis Support

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in a major diplomatic outreach has gone on record to praise India as the first and fore most ally of the island nation saying that he cannot thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi enough on how India supported the nation whenever a crisis hits his nation. An important turn around in the tone by Muizzu and a name dropping rhetoric on his India Out campaign, the statement was made when PM Modi visited the Maldives on a two-day state visit. The announcements are a reminder of a re-launched pledge of deepening the bilateral relationship between the two neighbours of the ocean.

A Switch in Diplomatic Approach-

The declaration by President Muizzu follows some tense exchanges that followed his electoral campaign pledge to deploy the Indian military forces out of the Maldives. Yet, the new trends, such as additional economic aid to India and being the first to help in case of crisis seem to establish a more cooperative atmosphere. The visit by PM Modi who has also come to the Maldives on his first ever visit to the country since his third term consisted of broad discussions between the two leaders so as to strengthen cooperation in different sectors.

The lasting role of first responder in India-

One outstanding feature to note about the praise that Muizzu gave to India was the fact that he did not miss to show his appreciation to India regarding their consistent stand to act as the first responder in any situation in which Maldives found itself. It represents the active attitude of the Indian towards the safety of the region and humanitarian action. India has traditionally been helpful in the times of natural disasters and ensuing consequences, pandemics, and economic crampons, which enhances its reputation as a trustworthy force in the Indian Ocean. This role has been reaffirmed in this visit where the Prime Minister Modi mentioned India has a policy of Neighbourhood first as well as Vision MAHASAGAR.

Tangible show of Appreciation-

Financial Assistance: India declared a fresh 4,850 crore rupees (approximately 565 million USD) Line of Credit in order to develop infrastructure and other projects within Maldives. Also, an amendatory agreement was signed to make the annual debt repayment scheme to India by the Maldives cut by 40% or cut by 31 million in the annual debt repayment scheme of the Maldives to India due to which India enjoyed significant financial relief.

*Infrastructure and Defence Assistance: PM Modi presented 3,300 social housing units, and 72 vehicle units for the Maldives National Defence Force, and other immigration authorities. The two leaders jointly commissioned an extremely modern building for the Maldivian Ministry of Defence which PM Modi stated was a “concrete structure of trust” signifying their strong bond.

*Health Assistance: India presented two units of Aarogya Maitri Health Cube (BHISHM) sets to the Government of Maldives, equipped with high medical standards capable of providing help to 200 casualties and sustaining a medical team for 72 hours.

Progress on a bilateral investment treaty and Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was also made.
President Muizzu also strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and expressed solidarity with India in its fight against terrorism which is indicative of the renewed warmth in bilateral relations. This positive trajectory underscores a commonality of mutual understanding about interests and the primacy of a strong partnership for regional security and prosperity.
