Dhankhar Resignation Sparks Speculation: Inside Story Reveals Hidden Political Motives

The abrupt adoption of the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice-President of India on July 21, 2025 under the pretext of health related issues and following medical advice has thrown a shock in the political front raising the eyebrows of the speculations on the actual depression reasons behind his dismissal. Although the reason cited is health problems, most political analysts and opposition leaders mention that there is more than what meets the eye in this development.

Having taken charge as Vice-President in August 2022, Dhankhar was constitutionally bound to serve a term of five years up to 2027. That was two years before his time and hence he became the third Vice-President in the Indian history to resign in the middle of the term and that too without simply aiming to contest in the presidential elections, and that too, being the sole one. This unnatural time slot, when it is simply the first day of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament has further provoked the gossips.

Dhankhar had been a vice-President during his time in office, and as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha by extension, he was considered someone with an aggressive approach and opposed to the Opposition a lot of the time. Constant conflict with the Mamata Banerjee Trinamool Congress regime that is headed by Mamata Banerjee also characterized his previous tenure as the Governor of West Bengal. These high-profile clashes especially in the Rajya Sabha, where he had several times underlined parliamentary supremacy and attacked judicial activism, had already made him a leader and a known, especially controversial, figure. As a matter of fact, the Opposition was moved even to an unprecedented motion to impeach him, which was however rejected.

Although it was confirmed that Dhankhar had performed an angioplasty surgery a couple of months earlier, and that he has been visibly weak in some events, the fact that he was active on the ground in Parliament the same day that he stepped down appeared contrary to the immediate seriousness of an exit as a direct result of medical conditions.

Dhankhar was in charge of running a Rajya Sabha session, making interventions in bills, even scheduled to travel to Jaipur, and all of a sudden went on health grounds, and most find it hard to believe that health is the only or the dominate reason for leaving.

Opposition leaders including Jairam Ramesh (Congress) also quickly questioned this ‘surprising’ decision as some “far deeper reasons.” It is easy to see why this may have caught everyone’s attention with the recent notice by the opposition calling for the removal of a High Court judge that Dhankhar had acknowledged in the House.
Irrespective of what that reason may be, there are now both constitutional and political issues connected to Dhankhar’s resignation act. The wheels are already in motion to elect a new Vice-President (as an individual holding the second high office in the land is a significant constitutional office) and ex-officio the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The BJP-led NDA is bound to sit as an electoral college in and regionally to appraise where their next short list of candidates are shaped and possibly where the state will provide its next Vice-President openly as this will be the next opportunity for another bureaucratic king-pin to be recognized. Hence, it can be seen this is a little more than a ‘run-of-the-mill’ health issue. It portrays personal wellbeing against political power, exposing some underlying back-room political reasoning and care as high-stakes politics plays out in India.
