Dheeraj Kumar’s Enduring Legacy: From Iconic Film Roles to Spiritual TV Epics

At Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai veteran actor and television producer Dheeraj Kumar passed away at the age of 79 following a fight with pneumonia. The actor was admitted to the intensive care unit earlier this week after experiencing severe breathing problems and he was kept on a ventilator. His family thanked supporters and well-wishers for their prayers and support confirmed the news and asked for privacy. 

Reputed in Indian television and film Kumar recently appeared in public at the ISKCON temples inauguration ceremony in Kharghar Navi Mumbai. During his remarks he conveyed his admiration for Sanatan Dharma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When I arrived here I was humble. He expressed his strong spiritual ties by saying even though they called me the VVIP I think the true VVIP is God.

Through his roles in a number of well-known movies from the 1970s and 1980s Dheeraj Kumar established himself in Hindi cinema. Alongside Manoj Kumar and Zeenat Aman he starred in important supporting parts in films such as Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). Among the films in his discography are Swami Kranti and Heera Panna. During his career he collaborated with many of the biggest names in the industry and acted in lead parts in Punjabi films in addition to Hindi ones.

TV Shows Hosted by Dheeraj Kumar

In addition to his work in movies Dheeraj Kumar’s production company Creative Eye Limited had a significant influence on Indian television. He was the creator of a number of popular and enduring television programs especially in the genres of devotion and mythology. The well-known television shows Om Namah Shivay Shree Ganesh Jai Santoshi Maa and Jap Tap Vrat were produced under his banner. These shows which attracted large audiences throughout India were renowned for their captivating storytelling and spiritual themes. With thousands of hours of television content produced over the years Creative Eye has established itself as a major player in the Indian TV market. With series like Ishq Subhan Allah which received acclaim for its novel idea Dheeraj also dabbled in contemporary fiction.

Successes of Dheeraj Kumar

  • Along with many other Hindi films Dheeraj Kumar worked on Roti Kapda Aur Makan Sargam and Kranti. 
  • In 1965 he made his debut in show business. Along with Rajesh Khanna and Subhash Ghai he was a finalist in a talent show. The ultimate victor was Rajesh Khanna. 
  • His acting career spanned 21 Punjabi films between 1970 and 1984. He is chairman and managing director of Creative Eye, a production company he founded. The song Ka Karoon Sajani Aaye Na Balam was filmed on him in the movie Swami. Other films that he has worked on include Raaton Ka Raja and Heera Panna. 
  • Dheeraj had previously been present at the opening ceremony of the ISKCON temple in Navi Mumbai’s Kharghar neighborhood. He had commended Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives to promote Sanatan Dharma. 
  • I came here with a sense of humility he had said earlier. I think God is the real VVIP even though they called me the VVIP. The majesty and importance of the ISKCON temple were discussed by Prime Minister Modi and his remarks are always motivational. I have been profoundly moved by the love and affection of the people here. Phrases like Radhe Radhe Krishna Krishna have great spiritual significance and every time I visit this temple I feel at ease.
