Tesla Debuts In India With First Mumbai Showroom At BKC
Years of anticipation and speculation, weeks of careful negotiations, and planning is over, as electric vehicle giant Tesla enters the Indian market by opening its first showroom today in Mumbai in the plush Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15, 2025. This historical development signifies a major milestone to the company owned by Elon Musk as it ventures in one of the fastest-growing automobiles industries across the globe.
The world class showroom is situated at Maker Maxity Mall in BKC which is the first physical location in India by Tesla. It is not only meant to sell to customers but also to host a type of experience center, where potential customers can learn more about Tesla state-of-art technology, get to feel the vehicles and learn about Tesla ecosystem.
As it enters India, Tesla is going to be first with its popular, all-electric, SUV- Model Y. The Model Y will be available in two models; the Rear- Wheel Drive (RWD) and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD). The Model Y is available in RWD variant costing 59.89 lakh (Ex-showroom) whereas the LR RWD variant will be available at 67.89 lakh (Ex-showroom). These prices translate the effect of high Indian import duties on the fully built units, which was one of the contentious issues that have hampered the entry by Tesla in the past.
In a bid to bring in the model Y, the company has imported the six units of Model Y to display at Mumbai showroom and show the test drive. Besides, Tesla has also introduced the Supercharger gears and accessories, which is an indication that Tesla is set to build charging infrastructure to assist early adopters.
Following the launch in Mumbai, a second showroom is expected to follow in New Delhi by the end of July. Tesla recently hired a bunch of employees in India and has warehouses, showing it is a careful venture into the market. Presently, Tesla believes that it is more important to focus on selling imported models, and while local manufacturing plans are in discussions and policy plans, Tesla has yet to report anything related to local production.
