The Tale of Nine Fairies

According to local folklore, nine daughters of King Asha Rawat lived in the region. After taking a divine path and later transforming into fairies, these princesses took refuge in the idyllic heights above Khait Parvat. As time passed, strange happenings were observed by villagers: flowers would bloom without a season, lights in the forests appeared to twinkle, and at most eerie times during nights, a feminine laughter gave resonance to the air. Believers say that the fairies still live here, guarding the mountains, punishing however those who show disrespect toward nature.

Jeetu Bagdwal and the Flute of Fate The most popular legends associated with Khait Parvat include that of Jeetu Bagdwal, a shepherd whose flute played heavenly notes and could charm the creatures. From the marvelous tale, Jeetu’s music was so fine that it drove the fairies from their heavenly abode. According to legend, the fairies were so enraptured by Jeetu’s music that they enticed the fellow shepherd, and he was never again seen on Earth. Such an anecdote is sometime cited as proof for the existence of fairies, and many still believe that only the pure at heart can behold or hear the fairies of Khait Parvat.

What Science Cannot Explain

Apart from these legends, certain phenomena can’t be explained in this area. These include the occurrence of walnuts and garlic naturally growing, even at negative altitude. Some hikers hear traces of whispers that are untraceable, or see faint lights at night. The locals say that the mountain reacts to the disturbances very clearly. Loud noises or flashy attire are discouraged by the villagers as they feel such disrespect incurs wrath of the fairies. Some believe that the breakers of the unwritten laws can actually end-up ‘possessed’ or lost for days but reappear later without any memory.
