UK Bans Violent Porn Category Promoting Strangulation Amid Safety Concerns
UK bans porn category showing strangulation, calling it dangerous and degrading. The move aims to protect women from real-life harm and misogyny.
UK Bans Porn Category Depicting Strangulation During Sex, Calling It a Dangerous Act With Real-Life Consequences for Women
Modernizing women’s safety and making inroads into harmful conventions are cited as the principal reasons behind this landmark ruling upheld by the UK government proscribing pornography that includes strangulation during sex, denouncing it as a dangerous and degrading act with significant real-world consequences for women. The position represented a firm determent against all acts of violence against women and forms part of an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill.
Strangulation is being normalized through its use in pornography, which has led to a false framing of it as a safe or acceptable sexual behavior according to the government inquiry. The effect of this, according to officials, is increasingly dangerous—especially for women—and adds fuel to the fire of damaging attitudes towards women.

Minister for Victims and Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls, Alex Davies-Jones said: “The portrayal of violent acts warrants an immediate rethink. Depicting strangulation during sex is not only dangerous but also degrading with real-life consequences for women. Stamping out this utterly degrading and misogynist pornography will go a long way toward protecting women and send out a clear message to men and boys that misogyny will no longer be tolerated.”
The decision has been embraced by well-wishers who have long called for the regulation of violent sex content. Andrea Simon, Director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition (EVAW), described the ban as a very important victory. She emphasized the indelible harm of such acts: “There is no such thing as safe strangulation; women cannot consent to the long-term harm it can cause, including impaired cognitive functioning and memory.”
Simon further stated that the normalization of strangulation in pornography is especially harmful for young consumers. “Its widespread portrayal in porn is fueling dangerous behaviors, particularly among young people,” she cautioned. This act of cultural normalizing violence puts a dangerous precedent for real-life acts of sexual aggression and disrespecting women’s bodily autonomy.
This has been a political and cultural transformation. The UK ban on this kind of pornography is an acknowledgment that it is very much the attitudes and behaviors of digital content that are shaped, especially among impressionable audiences. This also raises wider questions about the responsibilities of an industry that continues to profit from the objectification and harming of women in the name of entertainment.

The government stands firm and sends strong messages: violence must never be normalized or trivialized, even in the guise of consensual adult content. In banning porn, which glorifies strangulation, the UK is taking meaningful steps to protect women and also to regulate an industry that often enjoys complete impunity.
This action upholds the right to consent, respect, and safety, both online and offline. With the UK in the forefront, other countries might soon follow suit in critically evaluating the impact of violent sexual media on society and in taking serious measures against it.
