Trump privately approved Attack on Iran but withheld final order

According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the President Donald Trump agreed behind the scenes to military action plans to attack Iran, but importantly, did not give a final order to release it. This is revealed at a time when there is rising tension in the Middle East mainly in the backdrop of the current warfare between Israel and Iran.

The report indicates that Trump authorised his senior advisors by indicating his consent to these strike projections, reflecting his inclination to serious upsurge proving incomplete submission to the requirements of the Tehran nuclear programme. Although the targets were not talked about in detail, one could note the Fordow enrichment facility that is heavily underground and well fortified and could be considered to be a prime target requiring the most powerful bunker busting bombs so as to be effectively neutralized.

The move by Trump to approve the plans, but keep the final trigger reflects one aspect of his foreign policy demeanor: the desire to avoid making his intentions predictable and to use the elements of a perceived threat to remain in a superior bargaining position. Trump was quoted as saying in response to a question in front of an audience that “I may do it, I may not do it” when asked whether he will or will not act on military action and added that he would accept to make final decisions even before a second before it is due because things change, especially in war. He also mentioned “next week” and said that it would be “very big, possibly not more than a week,” and once again stirred rumors regarding some action to be carried out soon.

The report emphasises a high stake form of the geopolitical condition which entails the Iranian nuclear agenda and the stability of the region.  It indicates that although there were official indications in the country and around the world denying the existence of direct US offensive involvement in the active Israeli and Iranian war conflict, the US under Trump was seriously planning on the possible occurrence of military action.

The Pentagon characterized the approved plans and the placement of more Navy destroyers and carrier strike groups in the region as defensive, but at the same time also gave the US the ability to support Israel or to operate independently so that the US and its NATO allies could take action based on their own timelines.

The context for this report also notes Trump’s ongoing demands Iran abandon its nuclear ambitions unconditionally and his aversion to a ceasefire in the current conflict, instead calling for “total victory.” He has maintained that Iran was “weeks away” from acquiring a nuclear bomb before the Israeli strikes, and now framed the issue as being at that juncture where the US had to do something.

This strategic ambiguity, and then unilaterally approving military options without a final order, also serves to remind us how brittle Middle Eastern geopolitics can be, and how difficult it is for the highest levels of government to make decisions during these types of crises. It reflects the thin line between diplomacy and military positioning, and a quick turn that could happen.
