Batch of 100 Indians Evacuated from Iran, Reach Armenia Border
As tensions and war between the Middle East countries, especially between Iran and Israel build up, India has launched a major evacuation of its citizens in Iran to make sure that there is their safety. It has been reported that one batch about 100 Indians of whom a majority are students have managed to evacuate Iran and have already reached the Armenian border and this is a significant initial step in repatriating them.
The evacuation is based on the fact that air attacks are getting stronger and the security situation in Iran with such a volatile and unpredictable situation is also a dangerous one. The existence of the Indian citizen numbering about 10,000 in Iran, the number of students doing several courses being nearly 6,000, the Indian government watched over the situation closely. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Tehran have been in full swing touching base in establishing the safe transport of its nationals.
The first line of actions the Indian Embassy had to take was to move students to safer places in Iran partaking of areas believed to be of high risk like Tehran which has been exposed to Israeli attacks. It is also reported that about 600 students are transferred out of Tehran to Qom and students of Shiraz and Isfahan shifted to Yazd. But as Iranian airspace is said to have shut, the land route has made evacuation outward very crucial. The border with Armenia (Agarak) has become another major route of passage with the first batch of some 110 Indian students who managed to cross over to Armenia.
This development comes after recent diplomacy, including a call to S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, from Ararat Mirzoyan, his counterpart in Armenia, in order to arrange the evacuation. Armenia has pledged its full support for India’s efforts. While the immediate goal is to move citizens to Armenia for a future airlift, there are no guarantees that there will be a second evacuation flight – it all depends on the evolving situation. Also, we have seen reports that Iran has opened its land borders to say those stranded Indian students are able to cross into other neighboring countries an Azerbaijan or Turkmenistan where there are fewer tensions. The Indian Embassy in Tehran issued advisories, urging all Indian nationals to maintain vigilance, avoid unnecessary movement, and follow updates provided from official sources.

This evacuation is part of India’s broader aspirational commitment to ensure the safety of its diaspora around the world that are in conflict zones that is evident through past operations like “Operation Ajay” for Israel and “Operation Ganga” for Ukraine. The government of India is looking for all possible ways, including maritime evacuations from southern Iranian ports, to enable the safety of all its citizens. Although the first batch being moved to the Armenian border is a success, we must not forget about the thousands of other Indians waiting to move home safely.
