Ahmedabad Plane Crash: PM Modi Visits Wreckage Site, Meets Survivor After Air India Tragedy Kills 241
Following one of the world’s biggest aviation disasters ever to hit India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi jetted into Ahmedabad Friday to assess damage and extend his support to the affected. According to the Ahmedabad Plane Crash report, omitting reference to Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, the aircraft took off shortly after it was bound for London Gatwick, thus killing 241 onboard with damage all around the Meghaninagar area.
In his capacity as erstwhile Chief Minister of the state for twelve years, PM Modi landed on the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and went directly to the crash site by taking along Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Shock not just nationwide but worldwide was caused by the crash when it took place: It snatched national and international eyes immediately.
He visited the hostipal to spend time with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor from the disaster-a British national of Indian roots. Modi was shown to converse with doctors and medical officers attending to the survivor and offered encouragement. PM posted on social media a statement of his profound sorrow: “It is beyond words heartbreaking. At this sad hour, my thinking is with all those affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities working to assist those affected.”
The crash occurred promptly after AI 171 took off around 1.30 PM, after which the pilot made a ‘Mayday’ call to the ATC, indicating a full-blown emergency situation. Apparently moments later, the pilot completely lost altitude and crashed into the doctors’ residential quarters from BJ Medical College. The plane erupted into flames, billowing thick black smoke into the sky and royally messing things, including five medical students.

According to Air India, 241 fatalities were recorded as a result of the accident. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian among those in that airplane. The airline also confirmed that the aircraft was flown by highly experienced personnel: Captain Sumeet Sabharwal with more than 8,200 flying hours and First Officer Clive Kundar with 1,100 hours.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and minister for civil aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu had gone to the site a day earlier to inspect the rescue operations and offer updates. Now, the Centre reformed a high-level committee to review the crash. Although detailed investigations are underway, preliminary aviation reports conjectured that “bird strike or engine thrust failure” may likely be the cause of the accident.
