Celebrating Life’s Variety: International Day for Biological Diversity
International Day for Biological Diversity provides an opportunity to reflect on these challenges and to highlight the solutions.
International Day for Biological Diversity: Protecting Our Natural Heritage
Every year on May 22nd, International Day for Biological Diversity helps inform people everywhere about the crucial role of biodiversity for our planet and humanity. On this day, the United Nations emphasizes that we need to take care of all forms of life, including the smallest living things and the largest environments. It encourages people, communities, government bodies and organizations everywhere to acknowledge the importance of nature in our lives.
For the International Day for Biological Diversity in 2025, focus is given to show how ecosystems health is related to human health. The COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the link between destroying wildlife habitats and an increase in zoonotic diseases. Protecting the health of our environments is necessary for the environment and equally important for public health.
Biological diversity refers to all the diverse forms of life at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels. The variety in nature helps us by providing clean water and air, assisting the growth of crops, stable temperatures and rich soil. It supports food safety, health care and various aspects of both our economies and cultures. If we lose biodiversity, the services provided by nature are reduced, leading to problems for people and our planet’s health.
Biodiversity is being highly threatened at this point. Due to deforestation, expansion of agriculture, excessive use of resources, increased pollution, non-native species and climate problems, we are witnessing large-scale extinction of species. Biodiversity is decreasing at a rate never seen before in recorded human history and scientists expect that we will experience a sixth large-scale extinction.
Education and awareness are at the core of developing a global culture for biodiversity conservation. The International Day for Biological Diversity is a relevant opportunity to disseminate information, and findings, and support from a variety of biodiversity fields. This day can inspire people and groups to become more involved in biodiversity conservation by taking action in their lives whether it be making sustainable decisions as a consumer to support products responsibly produced, supporting conservation programs, initiatives, or policies at local to global scales.
The International Day for Biological Diversity also highlights the importance of international collaboration as biodiversity know no boundaries, as such, effective conservation must happen on international levels. The Convention on Biological Diversity or biodiversity-related multilateral agreements allow countries to work globally to the sustainable protection and use of biological resources on this planet.
