Defending Champions India Opt Out of 2025 Men’s Asia Cup in September

Reports from India state that the defending men’s cricket team of the country is planning to withdraw from the Asia Cup competition set for September. This action, as revealed by the BCCI, is due to the current strained relationship and tension between India and Pakistan.

Reports state that the BCCI has mentioned to the ACC that it will not take part in any cricket tournaments organized by the ACC for now. This means the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka next month is likely to be called off.

The decisions and actions taken by the ACC influence the BCCI a lot. Currently, the council is run by Mohsin Naqvi, who acts as Chairman of the PCB and is also the Interior Minister in the Pakistan government. According to some sources, the Indian cricket board is uncomfortable about belonging to a tournament run by a Pakistani minister.

The team from India will not join a tournament handled by the ACC, as its chief is a Pakistani minister. A BCCI source expressed this opinion, clarifying that this reflects what Indians currently feel about cricket ties with Pakistan.

The withdrawal of India is making it less likely that the 2025 Asia Cup will take place in the region. If India is not present, the tournament’s revenue and the level of competition would both be negatively affected. India-Pakistan games hold lots of interest for viewers and broadcasters, so this fixture is vital.

The Asia Cup 2025 was to be a T20 tournament, which is important preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The other anticipated nations were Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Clearly, without India the ACC might be inundated with pressure to either cancel or move the tournament and they would likely buckle under that pressure.

This is a prime example of how sport and politics often contaminate each other and this is exemplified in the India-Pakistan context. Bilateral cricket relations have ceased between the two nations for over a decade, and all meetings between the two neighbours on the field of play are now ceremonial due to the ICC and ACC recent events. The fact that India would make this announcement against Pakistan is significant as it also shows that India’s hard stance towards cricketology between themselves and the Pakistanis extends to multi-lateral endeavors that are governed by a council led by a Pakistani member of Cricket Management and will have business implications regarding Pakistan cricket leveraged off Indian cricket’s large footprint in the cricket economy within the region.
