Why is the mission such a big deal for India?
If Chandrayaan-3 does a soft landing on the moon, it will make India the fourth country to do so other than the United States, the Soviet Union, and China. Though China had succeeded in the first attempt, others had not. India had also made an unsuccessful attempt with Chandrayaan-2 to make a soft landing.
PM Modi also tweeted- “Chandrayaan-2 was equally pathbreaking because data from the Orbiter associated with it detected the presence of chromium, manganese and sodium for the first time through remote sensing. This will also provide more insights into the moon’s magmatic evolution.”

The spacecraft has successfully taken off from Earth and is now in orbit. The lander will take almost 42 days to complete its journey to the moon. The good news is that the spacecraft has been placed into the right orbit and will now engage in various orbit-raising maneuvers.
The Vikram lander has to make a perfect soft landing on the moon’s surface for the mission to be successful. This mission holds the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and its success will be a huge win for India.
